Here's the England team with a debut for Sam Curran. There are 2 other changes from the last test, Jennings in place of Stoneman and Woakes in place of Wood.
Alastair Cook, Keaton Jennings, Joe Root, Dawid Malan, Jonny Bairstow, Jos Buttler, Chris Woakes, Dominic Bess, Sam Curran, Stuart Broad, James Anderson.

Pakistan won the toss and are batting first.

Things are looking up for England. Pakistan 174 all out in only 48.1 overs and just like England last week it's a below-par total after choosing to bat first.

I can't understand why you'd pick a spinner to play at Headingley. They could have played another specialist batsman.

Bess retained his place because of his batting performance in the last test.

You can't compare Bess' batting with that of Jason Roy or Alex Hayles

I was not comparing Bess to anyone, but he was one of the few players to come out of the last test with any credit. He was included as the fifth bowler because he might be needed if the seamers failed and because he acquitted himself so well with the bat and Hales and Roy were never going to be picked once Jennings was chosen to open.

Hales has retired from red ball cricket at county and international level similar to Adil Rashid. He's committed to concentrating on white ball cricket only i.e. T20s and ODIs.

I think England did ok on day two. I am usually very critical of England batsmen but today they applied themselves and knuckled down. The wickets were caused by good balls and the batsmen didn't create self inflicted demise.
Ok so top score was only 49 but with tricky overhead conditions and a few balls with a bit of extra bounce I say fair play to England. A lead hard earned.
