^Are you saying we borrow the dinghys?

Why did you vote leave?

Ivoted Leave purely on the basis we needed to be an independent nation once more not based on what was being said by campaigners on both sides. Thatr was my thought all the way through but the politcians made IMO a complete bollocks of that.

We have always been an independent nation (uk). The EU is (without us)/was (with us) nothing more than a platform where like minded nations/neighbours would come together as one in pursuit of our common interests, whilst maintaining independence in sovereignty (subsidiarity). Now we are in no mans land?? while the EU work together (mostly) - particularly with the Ukrainian situation on their/our doorsteps. Even the issue of a joint European defence force has become a more likely proposition in the light of Russia's actions! I was never spooked by the notion that we would be part of such a defence force had we stayed in the EU, but that is yesterdays news!

I wonder how much influence we have now in world events!! Who will listen to us now?? Plenty of evidence that few are??

I’ve grown a little sanguine about it all, just because I’ve come to believe that Brexit was inevitable — in a Thanos kind of way. It was the delayed debt we had to pay for being such a globe-spanning fuck-off Empire for 400 years.

Our forefathers exported capitalism, liberalism, the scientific method, the rule of law, and the industrial revolution. And they made English the lingua franca of global communications.

Then the European Union came along. A perfectly sensible response to the fact that this continent had the pesky habit of setting itself on fire every generation or two. And even that was manageable enough when it was all just alpha male oafs poking each other with swords. But now we had the power to sheer away populations en masse — so something had to be done.

And we never took advantage of it the way our neighbours did. We looked across the channel and only saw an army of immigrants coming to take our jobs. We didn’t see the 20 new labour markets that were crying out for people who were native English speakers. They all got busy learning passable English, but we couldn’t be bothered to learn anything more than: “una cerveza por favor”.

And the perceived ‘injustices’ just kept piling up. We invented the computer … and America made a computer industry. We invented the World Wide Web … and America made Facebook.

The foreign bastards kept beating us at all the sports we invented. And the fucking metric system!?! Forget about the whole mathematical logic of it all … that was just another assault on our national identity!

Brexit had to happen. And now we have a cost of living crisis. It’ll resolve itself, I’m sure. These things always do. But I still think we squandered the chance to be a little more comfortable, in the vain hope of recapturing some of that historic ‘greatness’ to which we think we’re entitled. And it simply doesn’t exist anymore.

eek Show some compassion. Let the kids go first. We promise to come back every year and lay flowers at the borders.
