Apparently Downing or Henderson was offered in part exchange, but Fulham didn't want Downing and Henderson refused to go to Fulham. That meant Liverpool had to offer £6m or £7m in cash which they failed to do.

Pretty surprised they didn't have that much cash, and yet spent £15m on Joe Allen?

But Liverpool's owners are billionaires, surely paying just 6 million for a quality player like Dempsey wouldn't do any harm to their bank balance

Exactly my thinking. If, for argument's sake, they offered £4m at their highest, are you telling me they were unable/unwilling to chuck in a couple £m extra for him? He's a player who is worth £10m, was cheap as he was in his last year of contract. Can't understand how they thought we would succumb to their low-balling or that they couldn't afford him!

Fulham on the other hand are seriously weak in the central midfield area now, plenty of wingers and very few down the middle, unless they try and convert another player into that role, like they did with Dembele.

As much as I hated they way he went about leaving, Dempsey was brilliant for us, can't thank him enough for what he did for the club, just a shame he felt he had to burn his bridges with the club. Hope he is happy and his ambitions are met, I reckon he'll be pleased he doesn't have to uproot his family too much.

According to the Daily Mirror it was £3m.

Well then Liverpool have themselves to blame. Or is it arrogance that they think we would cave? Nah, just laziness on their part, they should have bought him after all the tapping up they did of him.

It seems that Chelsea were (surprisingly?) willing to let Sturridge join Liverpool, but Liverpool failed to make a cash offer for the player and only proposed a loan deal, which although Chelsea agreed to was knocked back by Sturridge himself who only wanted to leave Chelsea on a permanent transfer.

It may seem surprising that Chelsea would let Sturridge go, especially when he's currently in the England squad, but he doesn't find favour with the manager at Chelsea and is unlikely to agree to a new contract with the club. However, as you stated, he didn't leave during the transfer window just closed, because he was determined not to leave Chelsea unless it was on a permanent deal and Liverpool only proposed to take him on loan.
