After taking a kicking from Marine Le Pen's mob in European Elections, Emmanuel Macron rolls the dice, dissolves the National Assembly and calls an election! Has he just done a Sunak ?

^ And the elections will be just before Olympics.
But he's not putting his neck on the line by calling a Presidential election. So he'll still be prominent at the opening ceremony.

Giovanni Capoccia, Professor of Politics at Oxford Uni, posted a thread on twitter in which he speculates on Macron's motives. That Macron is calling Le Pen to a head on confrontation in a parliamentary election, where there are higher stakes & higher turnout than in EU elections. That the EU results would be a wake up call on the potential of National Rally & he would run a campaign based on a call to arms for all anti NR citizens to get behind him & stop the parties rise, he points out that a similar effect could happen on the right with supporters of the likes of Zemmour moving to NR to deal a blow to Macron.

If Macron did lose, it would result in a cohabitation with NR in which Jordan Bardella would likely be PM. Capoccia describes Bardella & NR leadership as incompetent & theorises that Macron will hope that 3 yrs of that incompetence in government would damage the party in the eyes of the public & that as President Macron, would be able to sabotage the Bardella administration.

*********

All very high risk, it could blow up in his face but whatever you think of him, Macron is not Sunak & is one of the 4/8 Presidents to win a second term in the history of France's fifth republic, he can win an election even when unpopular. However he did not win a majority in the National Assembley at the last election & that was before the pension reforms.

Very true that it's not a Presidential Election but as he's basically said he trusts the French People to vote the way he wants them to, he's effectively made it a vote of confidence in his Presidency.

I know we have the opportunity on July 4, but i get the feeling he is risking not opening the Olympics

What happens if he loses?
