RE: US Election & Presidency - The Silent Majority - 06-11-2018 12:37 Wow! How bad does a Trump campaign ad have to be when Fox refuses to run it RE: US Election & Presidency - SecretAgent - 06-11-2018 12:44 (06-11-2018 12:37 )The Silent Majority Wrote: Wow! RE: US Election & Presidency - HannahsPet - 06-11-2018 17:20 dont know why got a really bad feeling about the results today RE: US Election & Presidency - Rammyrascal - 06-11-2018 17:33 I think the republicans will get the senate & the democrats the house. Trump then is stuffed with his agenda RE: US Election & Presidency - skully - 06-11-2018 17:50 ^ Hopefully. So either the Democrats will claw back some power, be a headache for Republicans and Trump, add some balance (and lawsuits), or the Republicans will hold onto power and things will get a whole lot worse for those already targeted by them. I think the reasonable among the Republicans will see just how bad their party has become if Trump feels empowered tomorrow, some of the stuff being said recently is not only worrying, it's dangerous. For example, the border stuff, you not only have troops being sent (fear mongering), you have 'militia' heading that way, what could possibly go wrong when gun nuts think they have the right to defend their borders, you know, when they should be told to do one. I hate a lot of things that are going on in the UK at the moment, but I'm glad our politicians have at least some sense (mostly) and denounce hate and violence. I fear for asylum seekers heading to America. RE: US Election & Presidency - HannahsPet - 06-11-2018 18:57 ^^ It's nearly the return of Muller Time RE: US Election & Presidency - Foggy Mainwaring - 06-11-2018 20:14 As it is nearly 55 years since the assassination of John Fitgerald Kennedy, I thought I would try and offer some comparison between today's President and JFK, (through my eyes anyway). I was going to wait till closer to the time, but circumstances dictate otherwise. As a 10 year old in 1963, I had already developed a keen interest in history and current affairs. I had this strange feeling that here was a man of greatness, particularly after listening to his "Ich bin ein Berliner" speech. I'd heard him on the radio, and saw his picture in the papers, but that speech in June '63 attracted my attention. I have recently been reading some new material about his presidency, and it is quite an eye opener to see how much JFK was thwarted at every policy decision by the hawks in the Pentagon and the CIA. In fact some of the actions of senior military figures borders on insurbordination. The Bay of Pigs fiasco, whilst occurring in Kennedy's presidency had already been decided on by his predeccessor Eisenhower and the CIA. The CIA messed up and tried to blame Kennedy for not providing military support. Kenedy opposed military on the ground involvement in Vietnam, whilst the hawks wanted exactly that. Kennedy was keen to reduce nuclear weapons, and worked hard through his brother Robert to try and achieve that with secret letters to Nikita Khrushchev. His handling of the Cuban missile crisis is recognized as a masterstroke of diplomacy, showing resolve in standing his ground, whilst offering Khrushchev a way out by offering the withdrawal of outdated missiles from Turkey. October 1962, the world held its breath. I remember talking in the playground at school and the main topic was are we going to have a war. One of JFK's famous speeches contains the line; "Democracy isn't perfect but we haven't had to build a wall to keep people in", in reference to the Berlin Wall. Whereas JFK wanted to build bridges between people, he was instrumental in setting up the Peace Corps, to help develop nations in need; Trump wants to build a wall. Kennedy was a war hero, saving the lives of his fellow crew when their patrol boat sunk. Trump is a war dodger, but cruelly mocks a war veteran captured by the enemy. Kennedy wanted to improve race relations, Trump well, just a racist bigot. Nov 22nd 1963 we were robbed of a shining light. I can't imagine Donald Trump ever being recognized as a great statesman or people shedding tears for him.
