So they are the guys that stand in the front row in the scrimmage?

RE: NFL 2012/2013 - brummie - 29-08-2012 18:14

Defensive Line men are the big brutes who line up nose to nose with the opposing offensive line, the Linebackers line up just behind them ready to react, then Cornerbacks and Safeties provide the deep cover against receivers.

............DL DL DL..........
..........LB LB LB LB
...........CB S S CB
ratio of Linebackers and Defence Linemen will vary according to the defence called by the coach sometimes 3 linemen and 4 linebackers sometimes 4 linemen and 3 linebackers

Thanks mate, that was really helpful Big Grin

So is that the entire defensive team? If not, who else is there?

Could you do the same thing for the offensive team? That would be really great Smile

OK here goes, front of the offense are the big bruisers who are Guards & Tackles but for simplicity collectively known as the Offensive Line.On a running play they have to open a hole for the running Back and block as many potential tacklers as they can, or on a pass play they protect the QB so he has enough time to make the pass.
Behind them is the QuarterBack, the glamour boyand general of the team who calls the plays and either hands off to the running back or throws the pass.
Wide receivers are the speed merchants who run a preset pattern to be in position to catch the pass from the QB.
Running Backs take the hand off from the QB and have to carry it as far as possibel before being tackled.RB's come in 2 types either fast agile runners who try to dodge into open field and then use their speed,or the big bulldozers (usually deeper lying fullbacks) who rely on strength to barge through.
Additionally the Tight End will operate as an extra receiver or blocker depending on the play called.

as well as the offense and defense there is a third group of players called special teams that come on when one team is punting or kicking off. the kicking team has to try and stop the receiving team from returing the ball as far up the field as possible. the best special teams player ever is devin hester who still plays now for chicago bears who i support

We were awesome last year til Cutler, then Forte got injured. Im expecting big things this season from Lovie & co.

nice to find a fellow chicago bears fan on the forum. ive been a chicago bears fan for 27 years (yes 27 years) since i was 8 years old and have been very lucky to have seen them play twice. once in chicago in 1993 and last year at wembley stadium

think the bears will be the team to watch this year. the bears have traditionally been a running team with a great defense and special teams. however this offseason weve vastly improved our offense. got a good 1-2 punch running combo with forte and bush and for the first time in years weve got a very good group of recievers including brandon marshall. of course our defence will be good and we've got the best special teams players ever in devin hester.

here's some pics for beginners

So it looks increasingly like no NFL coverage on SKY this season. All through the summer they've ben stringing people along wih talk of 'on going negotiations' but with the new season kicking off on Wednsday and no deal in place it looks like only live football will be Monday night (Tuesday morning) on Channel 4 in the Uk. Just have to find an online live stream I suppose.
