I'm quite impressed with how decisive Austria's victory was - 20 of the 36 votes rated Austria first or second. RE: Eurovision 2014 - Charlemagne - 11-05-2014 07:39 I still don't understand why five of the countries get fast tracked directly to the final. The five apparently pay more (where have we heard that before in Europe). But does this mean that these countries don't have to try so much. Is it a coincidence that only Spain out of the big five were in the top half of the table. The qualifing countries seem to have an advantage when it comes to the finals. After all they've already been seen by the viewers around Europe. In 1996 Germany didn't qualify for the final, which meant that the organisers were confronted with much less financial support for the contest than expected. To prevent this funding issue from arising again in future years the 4 big contributors were given a bye into the final. With Italy's return to Eurovision after a long absence the big 4 became the big 5 and between them they pay 50% of the costs of staging the contest. The host broadcaster (Denmark this time) makes an even bigger contribution than each of the big 5, paying about 40% of the costs, so is also given a bye.
