In the Times world cup pull-out yesterday there was this stat :

Average goals per match on :

BBC - 2.3
ITV - 3.5

So complain all you want about the ad breaks, they provide the goods on the pitch.


Also, there were 67 goals in total, compared to 44 at the same stage in 2010.

- Algeria are the first African team to score four goals in a single WorldCup match.

Stats update after the 11th day of the tournament.

* Players with the most assists: Juan Guillermo Cuadrado (Colombia) and Daley Blind (Netherlands) both have 3.

* Players with the most successful dribbles: Lionel Messi (Argentina) has 14 and Eden Hazard (Belgium) has 13.

* Player committing the most fouls: Reza Ghoochanneijhad (Iran) has conceded 11 (and made 1 clean tackle).

* Player fouled the most: Georgios Samaras (Greece) has been awarded 12 free kicks (and twice been dispossessed fairly).

* Player offside the most: Mario Balotelli (Italy) with 6, but Ciro Immobile (Italy) has 3 despite playing only 23 mins).

The match against Costa Rica is the first 'dead rubber' in England's World Cup history - i.e. the first time England have played a match having already been eliminated from the competition or having already qualified for the next round.

* Most goal attempts: Karim Benzema with 15, Cristiano Ronaldo 14.

* Most successful dribbles: Alexis Sánchez with 16, Lionel Messi 14.

* Won most free kicks: Alexis Sánchez with 17, Georgios Samaras 12.

* Most Man of the Match awards: Arjen Robben 3 in 3 matches played.

Some stats from the Costa Rica-England match.

* England had 8 goal attempts (3 on target). Daniel Sturridge had 4 of those attempts (0 on target).

* Frank Lampard touched the ball the most for England with 97. Gary Cahill was next with 83 touches.

* Ross Barkley covered the most distance for England with 11,009m. Frank Lampard was next with 10,855m.

* England's biggest passer was Frank Lampard with 64 completed passes. Gary Cahill completed 57 and Luke Shaw 43.
