Yeah we are a cynical bunch but get a feeling a lot of the french companies are doing it for the right reasons.

I assume you're referring to LVMH Group (Luis Vuitton Moet Hennessy) who donated something like 200 Million Euros?

Have a guess how much they spent on advertising/Sponsorships/Promotions last year...

And to make it worse, the historic train station Gare de Lyon in Paris is on fire.

It may be deliberate.
