The guy who plays Sherlock Holmes might be an obvious choice. He's playing a quirky 'Dr Who' type character already though, so it's more of the same.

From leftfield, someone like Idris Elba might be interesting. He would become the first black Doctor, but I suspect he's too old, they seem be going for younger guys each time.

Another couple who might make good choices :
Russell Tovey. Usually plays more comic roles, but it might be interesting to see him play a more quirky and serious role like this.
My personal choice is Aidan Turner, who played the vampire character in Being Human, alongside Tovey. He played the dramatic side of that character well, and maintained a 'darker' side to that character, which would fit well with the role of the 'troubled' Doctor, I can see him being similar to Christopher Ecclestone's Doctor.

Yeah, this is always a popular argument (Alan Davies used to be a favourite choice "because he's played a similar character" Rolleyes ) However, people who say this always overlook that this was never the reason a Doctor was cast. Not even Tom Baker was cast "because he played a similar character"!

Clive Owen is another choice I always have to laugh at, although this one is usually because the suggester wants him to play James Bond, and failing that, Dr Who Bounce

Am I not understanding this properly? If you say Matt Smith is leaving the role in the episode that marks the 50th anniversary which is October/November, then won't he last appear in those months rather than at xmas.
Given that filming will wrap up some months before this milestone they could in theory have the new Dr in place for any xmas special.
Hope the backroom staff leave too and get replaced by people who will take Dr Who back to basics and produce sensible storylines that do not include that fucking River character Smile

was saying it was the xmas special because bbc will want the maximum ratings for it and the dr who xmas special always seems to get the best ratings
