I only have a Nissa as the nearest shop to my flat, but I think that must be shut - i'll have to take a look

To be honest, while I know that panic buying is happening -- I've seen it with my own eyes -- I'm not convinced that that is the cause of this food shortage.

When I think about my own pre-COVID routine:

1. My breakfast was a muffin on the way to work, a sandwich at Pret (or similar) for lunch, and only one meal a day consumed at home

2. At least one or two of those meals were take-aways bought on the way home

So I was really only eating, say, 5 meals at home in a typical week. I was also out of the house more than I was in it, so there was minimal opportunity for snacking in between.

Multiply that kind of dynamic across the economy and there is already a MASSIVE impact on the supply chain before any panic buying has even started.

Now kids aren't going to school, so that's more lunches that need to be made at home.

In short, I think supermarkets need time to adjust to a complete transformation in the way we consume food. It's not just about rationing or shaming the bulk buyers. The whole national supply chain was geared to a predictable rhythm of demand and -- overnight -- that changed. Even if everyone were very well-behaved, I'm pretty sure I'd still be eating pot noodles!

A crowd psychology expert has said that the “panic-buying” at the start of the coronavirus outbreak has become a self-fulfilling prophecy as shoppers responded to advice from the government.

Work update:-
Just hsd a call - store is not opening tomorrow as my colleagues refused to work and felt they were at risk and with me having more customer contact than most of my other colleague and being the oldest member of staff I felt at risk just as much as they are, and will not work and will be kept informed.
