Your gonna have to chill out on the Carwin love fest groundnpoundWink in his first fight back Lesnar disopsed of Carwin, who had only a one dimensional chance at winning & that was over after he tired himself out after two & a half minutes...

Anyway i think Lesnar is looking to be fitter & healthier in general after the illness he had which seemed pretty bad so he probably wants to do it on a personal level as well.
Interms of his fight career, i think the fact he could've lost to Carwin in the way he alomst did maybe made him think a little as he isn't known for his knockout power alone but more so the power due to his size. He maybe feels... Or should that be knows that his strength is controlling fighters on the ground or against the cage & that takes a lot of energy so naturally he'll need to be fitter. also he's best qualities are becoming more known as he settles in to his mma career so he'll need a plan be for fights like the one against Carwin e.g GSP winning the title back from Matt Serra with a well thought out plan which centred on his cardio.

Cain Velasquez is a NCAA Division I Wrestler & purple belt in Guerrilla Jiu-Jitsu, so Lesnar knows even though most of his wins are by KO he can still cause problems on the ground so Brock will want to be the star player in a domain he feels is his own. This has all the hallmarks of a great fight so lets hope it turns out that way... Although i was thinking the same with 3 fights on Saturday???

RE: UFC - mitchell - 23-10-2010 16:58

UFC 121 tonight, here's what me thinks.

Brendan Schaub v Gabriel Gonzaga A big step up for Schaub who i think is gonna be a good fighter but in his only fight against a top fighter he lost Roy Nelson rd 1 KO. The same could be said for Gonzaga as he has lost all his big UFC fights so far & is 3-2 in his last 5, 7 of his last 8 ending in KO/TKO 3-4. His last 5 haven't been past rd 1. Schaub hasn't been past rd 1 yet 6-1 TKO/KO. the winner of this will climb a peg or two to a big fight. - Brenden Schaub, TKO
Tito Ortiz v Matt Hamill This is an intriguing fight as both are good on the ground but Hamill has started to show good stand up as well 3-1 in his last 6. Hamill is on a good streak but this is only his 2nd fight this year albeit his last was in June. Tito hasn't fought since Nov 09 & he's W0-L3-D1 in the last 4 years, his back & fitness will be questionable. His last wins of any note were Vitor Belfort Feb 05 & Forrest Griffin Apr 06. - Matt Hamill UD, TKO possible
Diego Sanchez v Paulo Thiago Sanchez back in the welterweight division needs a win to keep himself on the big name list & is coming off the back of 2 losses & the only 4 losses of his career in his last 8 fights. Thiago is a fighter i like & started well 11-0 but in the UFC is 3-2 but has already been in with some of the top fighters. I think this has potential for fight of the night. - Paulo Thiago UD
Jake Shields v Martin Kampmann Shields is a fighter i've not seen much of & is making his UFC debut, & in typical fashion who do the UFC put infront of him... Yeah none other than the UFC's top sparing partner Martin Kampmann. Kampmann is a decent fighter with a 8-2 UFC record but i can't help thinking they are treating him the same as Marcus Davis, somone who will always have a good record but will never be considered to be worthy of a contender/title fight. Kampmann has a good mix of KO/Subs with a lot of rd 1 wins, Shields a BBJ/wrestler has 10 subs & 12 decisions & has fought some top fighters, so something has to give, either Kampmann early or Shields late on. - Shields split decision
Brock Lesnar v Cain Velasquez Well... Is this the moment... Or have we heard it all before!!! Velazquez has a similar record to Shane Carwin did coming into this fight in the form of wins/KO's & the same as Carwin he can also wrestle. Carwin purple belt BBJ, NCAA Division 2 wrestler. Velazquez NCAA Division 1 wrestler, purple belt Guerrilla Jiu-Jitsu. Velazquez is known... By his team to have good energy levels, so he may not make the same mistake as Carwin & try to end it in round 1 with a flurry of punches as Brock covers & blocks with his arms. The big question is how good is Cain's wrestling interms of the octagon & an opponent like Lesnar. Lesnar is probably coming into this fight in the best shape he has ever been in & i doubt that will be on the same boast that you usually hear from every fighter "Oh i'm the best i've ever been", he knows that carwin gave him problems early on & that Valazquez has good wrestling ability so he'll want to be able to be the aggressor in every aspect of the fight. This, & considering the last fight i say with some scepticism could be the best heavyweight title fight for sometime & due to the unknown nature of Cain Valazquez's octagon wrestling ability against a fighter like Brock Lesnar, makes this a hard call to make, but seen as i'm not a sit on the gate post man & even though i think it won't happen... See last title fight!!!. - Cain Velazquez TKO, Groundnpound

RE: UFC - groundnpound - 23-10-2010 17:43

Nice post again Mitchell Smile

I can really only see Lesnar winning tonight..Months ago i kinda fancied Velasquez but not anymore.I think Brock will be too strong for Cain and can just imagine him all over the challenger from the off! I think we might see a more explosive Lesnar than weve been used to tonight.Think he'll go after Cain and try and get him out of there like he did to Mir the 2nd time round. That's the kind of fight i expect to see tonight...With a blooded shocked looking Cain Velasquez standing beside Lesnar when his hand is raised. So for me.. Lesnar to win TKO

Schaub - TKO Victory
Hamill - Split Decision Victory
Sanchez - Split Decision Victory (Road to Recovery for Diego)
Shields - TKO Victory

Hopefully a good show in prospect! Can't wait for the Main Event Smile

RE: UFC - groundnpound - 24-10-2010 01:54

RE: UFC - Gaz "AV1" Aston - 24-10-2010 11:00

Caine Velasquez just executed the same game plan that Shane Carwin did in his fight with Lesnar, he just had the forethought to pick his punches when Lesnar was in the prone position, thus insuring he wouldnt gas out which effectively is what happened to Carwin.

A great main event to a very good card and as Joe Rogan said in Commentary "this could be the start of a whole new era!"

Diego Sanchez v Paulo Thiago - Paulo Thiago UD

Brock Lesnar v Cain Velasquez Well... Is this the moment... - Cain Velazquez TKO, Groundnpound

Brenden Schaub, TKO Smile At least i picked the winner
Matt Hamill UD, TKO possible Big Grin
Paulo Thiago UD annoyed
Shields split decision Big Grin
Cain Velazquez TKO, Groundnpound Big GrinBig GrinBig Grin

Brendan Schaub v Gabriel Gonzaga This fight went as i thought it would from Schaub's point, he had too much agility on his feet & that confused a stationary Gonzaga who once again looked like he thought he had all the time in the world, someone needs to tell him an mma fight is 15min long. A good win for Schaub but he will face tougher opponents from now on & may need to improve his ground game, a good fighter to look out for over the next 18/24 months.
Tito Ortiz v Matt Hamill Not the most eventful fight, but that was down to a number of factors, Tito's ring rust & his groundnpound ability. Tito didn't want to shoot for the takedown due to the top level wrestling of Hamill & the same with Hamill who knew Tito is dangerous on the ground, thus also making him cautious to use his new found stand up as well, but it was still a big win for Hamill & who knows where Tito goes from here as there wasn't much to talk about either for or more importantly against his first fight in 11 months.
Diego Sanchez v Paulo Thiago A big & much needed win for Diego & a great performance as well, showing some of the Diego Sanchez of old. I was a little surprised at the fitness of Paulo Thiago given his day job as a member of the Brazilian elite special police force & an mma fighter. The first round was pretty even if not in favour of Thiago but Diego came out in the second with intent & the big takedown set the beginning of the end as Thiago's fitness started to leave him & Diego set about him with his superior energy levels. All credit to Paulo for always trying to stay in the fight by going for a sub attempt, & as for the 30-26 score card bladewave
Jake Shields v Martin Kampmann I try to stick to what i've seen when writing my post event reviews & not go with my personal thoughts but Jake Shields is already i fighter i have no intrest in. It wasn't a great performance from Kampmann who got his tactics all wrong & should've used his stand up ability to stay away from Shields with in & out kicks & punches & draw out a possibly boring win. Shields is a wrestler albeit a very good one but this isn't the WWF it MMA - Mixed Martial Arts. Not only on the many forums but also from the fighters themselves the issue of too much wrestling now creeping into mma over the past 18 months has been pointed out & now you have a fighter (Wrestler) aready being told if you win your first fight in the UFC your 2nd will be for the title. What was it i said about Martin Kampmann being the UFC's bitch for this kind of fight, if he got his strategy right & beat Shields would the UFC have given him a title shot... This fight was bollocks & it's no surprise that after his UFC debut Jake Shields wasn't interviewed by Joe Rogan. Oh & i think i'll pass on the Rogan Shields wedding invitation, his commentary was more one sided than a gangbang!!!
Brock Lesnar v Cain Velasquez What a performance from Cain Velazquez, total domination from the NEW champ. Lesnar came out like he wanted to go straight for the takedown but the cool calm Velazquez was having none of it, the first minute looked like it was gonna be a good fight with Velazquez looking the more comfortable but when he sprung back up from the Lesnar takedown & still looked Calm & composed this put a few thoughts in the mind of Lesnar & he knew he was in a battle for his crown when Velazquez took him down with some ease & then came the moment which marked the beginning of the new heavyweight era when Brock Lesnar did some kind of triple somersault backflip pirouette thing & Velazquez took full advantage & set about 2:17 of controlled groundnpound to claim a monstrous win. Brock Lesnar was totally exposed in this fight in the fact that if he's not the one going forward & being the aggressor then he doesn't feel comfortable & becomes open to a stand up attack which he doesn't yet know how to deal with, this would've been the case in the Carwin fight if Carwin was fitter. Lesnar is still new to the sport & shouldn't have been given a title shot so soon & he will now need to perfect his alround game. Cain Velazquez on the other hand has all the tools to be the dominant force that people thought Lesnar was gonna be, His stand up is probably the best in the division & his wrestling is first class, but more so is his composure & attitude in the octagon. A word of caution for his first defence against Junior dos Santos, both fighters love the stand up game, Velazquez 9-0 8KO's, dos Santos 12-1 8 KO's, anything can happen in this kind of fight...

Gotta give a mention to Court Mcgee who made an impressive debut. Don't know if the first round was tactics or just a lack of experience but the next one & three quarters showed that he's gonna have a good mma career.

I've watched the main event 3 times already but not on this link so i don't know how it plays but it looks ok. Here you go if you've not seen it yet as i know a few of you like astonv1 haven't got ESPN. Watch it again & again, it's that good!!!
