It tough on the guys who miss the penalties. There were lots of others who either got substituted so that they didn't have to take one. Or there were more experienced players who didn't come forward.

It was just a shame that things didn't go their way.

From me there's just praise to them for having the balls to step up, not condemnation for missing.

And the worse that can happen now is for them to appear in a pizza advert Wink

Exactly Charles and it's bad form to criticise those who did not take penalties as well. Question why by all means to aid understanding but none of them deserve criticism

That isn't true. Southgate's already said that isn't true. He picked the kickers he wanted and nobody backed out.

You're right about the substitutions though. Southgate has already said that 2 of his chosen 5 had been taken off.

Actually, the England way is to conceive and codify a bunch of sports, then conquer and subjugate half-the-globe, wait 100 years, and then graciously allow the rest of the world to kick our asses at all the sports we invented.

To be fair non of the former colonies are particularly good at football but that was merely a working class sport, they weren't the power in the Empire.

Teaching India cricket on the other hand, that has come back to bite the ruling class in the arse like a fucking Bengal Tiger

I would love to see the British Isles and Ireland host the World Cup in 2030. The horrible violence shown when thugs broke in to Wembley during the Euro 2020 final may have reduced the chances though.

I've heard reports of police officers and other emergency service workers assaulted by these thugs, including a serious attack on a transport police officer. Attacks on people who are working hard to keep this country safe. It's just shameful and they've let everyone down.

Now they (the thugs) might take away our World Cup dream... how dare they?

Fair point, but it wasn’t just through colonisation that we exported the Beautiful Game. We just promiscuously got around, I guess.

You can see it the anglicised names of many foreign clubs: e.g. AC Milan (not Milano); Genoa (not Genova). Half the clubs in Europe modelled their original kits on British clubs (e.g. Juventus and Notts County, Rotterdam and Sunderland). Lots of little examples like this … all learned through excessive interest in Subbuteo during a misspent childhood.

Some would argue that the single biggest factor in the global spread of football was London’s Corinthians Football Club. They were football’s equivalent of the Harlem Globetrotters, who thought penalty kicks were ‘vulgar’ and wouldn’t put more than half-a-dozen past you, because that would be ‘unsportsmanlike’.

But this is all a bit of a digression, and now I just want to look for a Subbuteo set on eBay…

Forgive me, this post has taken longer to construct than normal, my concenteation span is not the best at present.

I despair at social media sometimes.
It should be a tool for information and force for good.
Unfortunately and reprehensibly too much of the stuff some people put out there is vile beyond belief. No doubt the excuses will be 'Oh I was drunk' or 'Oh it was heat of the moment' or 'I was angry and frustrated' or 'Passions ran high and got the better of me'.
No, no, no and no. Not acceptable.
Any attempt to offer excuse is as despicable as the initial act of posting hate based vitriol and diatribe.
There can be no doubt.
Targetting black footballers in such a shameful fashion is NOT a common coincidence with leeway for excuse. It is despicable, deplorable, ignorant abuse submitted knowingly and deliberately.
It is an exposition of the true colours of some folk and partial societal cancer that has riddled not just this country but too much of the human race.

These people thinking they can get away with it behind the mask of a keypad or keyboard prove themselves to not only be culturally illiterate, offensive and intolerant but also cowardly beyond words.

They have the temerity, audacity and outrageous bare faced cheek to claim support of club and country. Thankfully clubs are rejecting them from the fold by banning them.
I am not at all convinced by the words or actions of the government in dealing with this issue mainly because of the stance on taking the knee.

I am a supporter of Wolverhampton Wanderers and England.
It is with despair and rage I learnt that a so called Wolves supporter is one of those guilty of sending racist abuse towards England players in the last 24 hours.
To whoever you are this is my message.

You do not represent Wolves or England. You are not fit to do so.
You are not fit to lace or clean the boots of Rashford, Saka and Sancho let alone wear them. You tarnish the reputation of Wulfrunians and English folk by your any attempt to claim allegiance to either.
I don't want you and your gutless, spineless, uneducated, prejudiced bile anywhere near the club and country that I Iove so much.
Kindly do yourself a favour and educate yourself so you can perhaps one day in the future realize the damage you have done.

This thread has now become a page with has nothing to do with football now, it's more about the nastiness of human nature, a problem I personally think we will never solve.
I feel this is now becoming like Twitter or Facebook which I feel we all need to avoid really.

RE: UEFA European Championship 2021 - southsidestu - 12-07-2021 23:58

We should never avoid anti-racism & calling out the vile cowards who abuse people based on such matters
