Shin Gojira(2016)
Probably the most intelligent and satirical monster film ever made.Co-directed by Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi.The film taps into the fears of a Japan still reeling from the horror of the 2011 earthquake that triggered Fukushima Diiachi nuclear disaster.Told from the point of view of the public,the government trying to deal with the situation and how the USA and other foreign nations reacted at the time.Of course it all revolves around the most famous giant monster of all time.With the exception of a couple of weak captivatingthis is captavating and much more emotive than any of the recent,brainless monster blockbusters spewed out in Hollywood.

Children Of The Corn(1984)
Fritz Kiersch's adaptation of Stephen King's story boasts an excellent performance from John Franklin as a strange teenage preacher who leads a group of youngsters in a mission to kill all adults in order to appease "He who walks behind the rows."
Despite a few clichés this is well acted and has enough genuinely creepy moments for scare fans,again though this is another 80's movie with a metaphor about the distrust younger people feel toward adults and vice versa.

Beginners (2010) An imaginatively directed drama/comedy in which cartoonist (Ewan McGregor) receives two surprises, his father (Christopher Plummer) has terminal cancer and has a gay lover( Goran Visnjic). This film's chief assets are the acting(Plummer received a Supporting Actor Oscar) and the way it moves between time periods, covering the young McGregor (Keegan Boos) and his relationship with his mother(Mary Page Keller), the father/son relationship at the end of the father's life, and McGregor and his quirky, fragile girlfriend(Melanie Laurent) and their time together after his father has died. The only major weakness is Visnjic's character which is rather underwritten. Also starring Cosmo as Arthur the dog! 7/10

Checkmate(1935)
A Scotland Yard detective faces the toughest case of his career whilst investigating the crimes of a jewel theif gang who operate in London.Gritty and tense with top performances from Maurice Evans,Felix Aylmer and Evelyn Foster.

Just been to see John Wick - Chapter 2. Even better than the original film, and I absolutely adore the first film, just so slick and stylish, as someone who loves action films, this is just superb cinema, something that I would gladly watch over and over

Get Carter (1971)
I finally checked out this classic Michael Caine thriller earlier tonight. Typical gritty 70's flick (which isn't a bad thing).
I thought it was great, with Caine putting in a top performance, as the man trying to hunt down the men that killed his brother.

Vertigo (1958) Hitchcock's thriller starring James Stewart as an ex cop suffering from acrophobia asked by his friend (Tom Helmore) to follow his wife (Kim Novak) was voted best film ever in 2012 by Sight And Sound magazine. I don't agree, there are better films, including other ones by Hitch, the film's storyline has flaws, and some of the script is solid rather than sparkling. What the film does have however is plenty of superb visual moments both in framing, direction and colour which stay with you after the film is over. Hitch has some good cinematic tricks too, including Stewart's' vertigo' moments. Like many of his films, Hitch wasn't happy with his actors blaming Stewart's age for the film's box office failure and saying Novak was miscast, unfair as both did well with complex characters. A good supporting performance from Barbara Bel Geddes too. 8/10

Nice to see another golden age movie being recommended. It must be a real gem, as it's not even listed on IMDB! How did you come by it?

Great movie! Classic Hitchcock.
I'm glad it got re-released in the 70's, and reviews were more favourable, and more people saw it, for how good of a film it is.
