Time for a positive story. Well done Jack Grealish, I'm sure it would have been much easier to go straight back to the dressing room after losing in that way.

You however repeatedly condemn individual cricketers and footballers for what you perceive to be their mental weakness. There should be a special rock for you to crawl back under.

I haven't got a clue what you are talking about ,you are just making stuff up I haven't condemn anyone I can't see why u don't think a more experienced player is more likely to score in a high pressure situation,
I think the truth is u just really don't like me for some reason and like to have a go at every single thing I post on the forum fuck knows what I ever did to you, but just get the feeling you enjoy bullying me , always have to put a personal insult in to every reply to one of my messages , I wish u would just leave me alone and go and pick on someone else,

^ I’ve nothing against you Winsaw - I really haven’t but you put blame on Sterling wrongly and implied be bottled it. You should not attack anyone in my opinion in those terms and that’s what I called out. Others also factually described the penalty taker selection process but at no point have you acknowledged that you may be wrong.

A disagreement between us is simply that. You have no need to portray yourself as a victim over our disagreement & I have certainly not bullied you. I will now continue to ignore you as much as I can. If I see you post something I think deserves thanks then I will do so. If I think you cross a line in attacks on people such as Moeen Ali or Raheem Sterling for their mental strength then I will comment if I wish to do so because I think such attacks are reprehensible.

By the way congrats for playing football to County level. I regrettably only lasted a few weeks on the books of a Championship side as a schoolboy before a severe knee ligament injury ended any thought of further progress. In those days medical science was much more limited than it is today but in reality I doubt I was good enough as speed not skill was my major asset.

It appears that Portsmouth Under 18s have a few delightful individuals in their Academy.

I hope they enjoy the career change that's coming their way

The tournament stats for VAR:
Matches 51
VAR checks 276 (referees used the pitchside monitor in 8 of these)
Decisions changed 28

Those long distance lobs always tend to pop up on the shortlists for goal of the tournament / goal of the season / goal of the decade competitions, but they never win.

But in this case it did win. Second was Paul Pogba (France v Switzerland) and third Luka Modric (Croatia v Scotland).

A bit of a delayed reaction on this post, but I just listened to a couple of post-euros podcasts on a long train journey. Sometimes the ‘slow news’ is more contemplative and thoughtful than the ‘hot takes’ when you’re still feeling the emotional pain of another exit on penalties.

It used to always frustrate me after some major tournament debacle to hear the pundits go on and on about how we needed to be more like ______ (insert name of country that had just won that year’s tournament). We needed to be more like France or Spain or Germany, etc. And apart from the laziness of the punditry — our sprinters should be more like the Jamaicans and our ice hockey players should be more Canadian — it just seemed like a bad idea. England, I thought, should find a uniquely “English” way of playing and play it better than anyone else. I don’t think we’ve got there, but I think we’re heading in that direction.

Anyway, all that to say, what a joy it was to hear pundits with German and French accents talking about how other teams should emulate the England and Italy “projects”, which — for all their tactical differences — had one big quality in common: they were built around a squad, with a philosophy, rather than the individual brilliance of all-star players.

It felt like being in a parallel universe … but a nice one.
