And now the newsroon of the NOTW is a designated crime scene. What chance is there of any eviderce remaining, once the paper has rolled off for the last time? if they haven't destroyed any evidence already!

"The Watergate and phone-hacking scandals had small beginnings – a break-in at a hotel, and a single "rogue" reporter and private detective. The News of the World scandal is not just about phone hacking. It is also about statements made to Parliament, personally to David Cameron, and in a court of law which – as James Murdoch has now admitted – were not true. As with Watergate, which brought down Richard Nixon's presidency, the cover-up could have bigger implications than the original offence."

so is there a possibility that this could bring down the premership of David Cameron, given his closeness to both Brooks and Coulson?

Thanks for posting this. A very informative exchange - the combative arrogance of the NOW guy gives an indicator as to what went wrong and the fact that he still (and presumably) his colleagues didn't understand that wrecking people's lives in pursuit of an often puerile story was in any way wrong. It's bad to do it to a celebrity but to do it to non celebrities is unforgivable - normally, they genuinely have no right of reply.

This interview, for me garnered no sympathy for NOW, or it's staff - it made me feel - good riddance.

I feel the same way about the issue of the public in general. While celebrities can afford to take action against a newspaper, we would find it financially impossible (unles we did it in a group), and it right to say that we have no right to reply when it happens to us and nor would the police be interested or CPS. Yet what has been the CPS' role in all of this?
Now the NOTW newsroom is a crime scene. News Corp have denied they have deleted emails that have links to the story, but who can say that there was someone secretly doing just that?

Yet it has been widely reported that the police knew that Milly Dowlers' phone was hacked into as it was mentioned in their files in 2006!! if they knew about it back then, did they inform her family that it had happened?

But as for the newspaper paying officers for information - it shows that for every good police officer, there is a corrupt and bent one.

Now Mr Murdoch, be bold and force Ms Brooks' resignation!!

Instead of 'Thank You & Goodbye' - shouldn't the headline be - 'Sorry'?

Okay, so we know that closing down the News of the World is a smoke screen. Get rid of the toxic brand.

But were the not plans to merge the Sun and NOTW in the pipeline anyway? I seem to remember articles in the financial press about this before this scandal let loose. I could be mistaken, I've been drinking.

Why does News International have to buy the remaining 61% of BSkyB? Why is no one coming forward to Uncle Rupe and saying, look Uncle Rupe, we realise you are in a bit of a bind, we'll buy your stake off you.

Football rights, broadband, telephony, it's a nice little earner. (On a side note, all you fully packaged Sky subscribers, broadband, telephone, happy with your service from a company involved with News International. They might be watching, listening.)

What, you mean, as much as Uncle Rupe loves his money, he loves being the de facto kingmaker in chief in the UK. Shurely not.

Make lots of money and still retain influence.

And fair is fair as to Sky News they have covered the story extensively, yes they've had the News International apologists on their broadcasts but so have the BBC and I actually have a better opinion of them than I used to although I do worry, if Uncle Rupe does acquire BSkyB and before Sky News is hived off as a 'separate entity', that as with the staff at the NOTW, the Sky News newsroom and management will suddenly be looking for alternative employment. (Kay Burley excepted, the dragon)

This story has got way out of hand. I'm not defending what they did, but the way people are banging on about it you'd have thought the News of the World had committed genocide. There are always journalists up to no good in one way or another, so I don't see why this has become such a big deal. I'll say again that I can't defend what they did, but even if I'm in a minority I think the story's not really the horrendous crime it's being made out to be.
