Some controversy tonight as Ali Carter tells the ref that he definitely hit a yellow ball that she said he didn't, and gets away with it, then the replay shows that he didn't hit it at all. Should the referee's decision be final? Did it affect the outcome of the frame or the match? Possibly. (he beat John Higgins 6-3 in the end)

I don't think the ref should have changed her decision, however I wouldn't blame her as snooker has a very proud and honourable history of players calling barely visible fouls on themselves so she maybe felt inclined to trust Ali.
For what it's worth I think he sincerely believed he hit the yellow ball, he wouldn't lie I don't think. But where a player and referee come to a different conclusion in a situation like that the ref on the monitors should have the final say, but I am unsure of the rules in this regard. But again I wouldn't attribute blame or fault with the ref or Ali Carter, the monitors should have been used, if allowed.

On the way up I thought he had grazed the yellow but I don't think the referee should change her decision because the player says he hit it

David Gilbert is through to the semi finals after a convincing 6-2 win over Stephen Maguire.
A superb 144 in the opening frame was the highlight for Gilbert who has played excellent snooker in both his matches so far.
