RE: US Election & Presidency - Charlemagne - 30-09-2020 15:16 America needs to get rid of the Electoral College. Just as we need to get rid of our system. Clinton had nearly 3 million more votes but Trump got in with their current system. They have been talking for years about changing it but so far they have failed to get the Republicans to agree. RE: US Election & Presidency - lovebabes56 - 30-09-2020 15:25 I would say if Trump wins then there has to be serious questions over the viability of the Electoral College but it probably would need a full Senate debate and agreement to get any changes through. They'd need 38 states to agree to that change too and that will never happen. RE: US Election & Presidency - The Silent Majority - 30-09-2020 16:21 Even the Republican commentators on the various news shows are saying Trump fucked up. Not in those words obviously. I loved Rick Santorum's take on the CNN aftershow. "I knew he was going to come in 'hot'. But that was too hot." RE: US Election & Presidency - skully - 30-09-2020 18:42 These debates show just how uneducated Trump is, he always resorts to childish antics. This man is America's president and may get a second term RE: US Election & Presidency - southsidestu - 30-09-2020 21:45 Even by Trump's standards he was bad, the debates against Clinton were nowhere near as awful. This was just a full on barrage of utter nonsense & drivel. At least when he was running in 2016 he had something to say: build the wall, drain the swap, renegotiate trade deals etc, you can argue how good or genuine these statements were but it gave you some idea of where he stood & what he wanted to do. I watched the whole thing live & I can barely remember anything he actually said. He seemed to just hurl accusations of socialism at Biden which is ridiculous because most Democratic Socialists on twitter hate Biden's guts, ironically Bernie is the only Democratic Socialist that likes Joe. Biden wasn't particularly good himself but he didn't have to be, the questions surrounding him were whether or not he was able to go toe to toe & remain in the debate for the full 90 which he did as even pundits on FOX news testified to. His best moments (other than standing up for his sons) were when he ignored Trump & looked down the camera to talk to the American people. In future debates he should do this more. Trump's main goal it seems was to derail Biden & sow doubt into the outcome of the election, which is essentially loser talk, his own internal polling will show a similar message to the ones in public domain. 4 yrs ago, they had Clinton ahead & she lost, the reason for this was that the pollsters did not survey enough college educated whites, generally because people with higher education tend to vote left wing. This time round the pollsters have corrected for that error & Biden is still even further ahead. Trump definitely sees Biden as a threat, because his roots of the working class boy (whose family had to move when his father was made redundant) from Scranton Pennsylvania, have him firmly entrenched in the rust belt/blue wall states that Trump flipped & make him popular with working class, non college educated whites who are Trump's core support. Biden is looing to lean into this as he is making the election about Scranton vs Park Avenue, something he alluded to in the debate with the line, "you wouldn't know a suburb if you took a wrong turn". I still find it difficult to call, all the indicators point to Biden which has me thinking is this going to be Kinnock in 92 situation. Biden is leading nationally & in key swing states & really all he has to do is repeat what Clinton got but with a little bit more in the Blue Wall states to flip them back. But American loves an incumbent, Obama is the only incumbent in recent history not to increase his vote second time out & as I said before with the exception of JFK & Ford, Carter & Bush 41 are the only one termers since FDR defeated Hoover in 1932. Plus is would be pretty much on point with the shit show of the last 5 yrs of politics. And if he does get a second term you can be sure he'll want to to go to war with China (on both a military and the trade front), if that happens I hope he'll realise the consequences of that for the wider world. |
