I've just learned that in fact Oliver Cromwell wasn't the instigator of banning Christmas-it had in fact happened before he came to power by a group by Parliamentarian puritans! He was also not averse to singing, dancing and playing silly games at Christmas but only in private-he still disapproved of Christmas in public.
