I wonder what is the strategy here? To hold this town, to push even further or eventually retreat to Ukraine? Is it just a way of diverting Russian forces from the Donbas or is this something more than that?

It's believed they have control of a nuclear power station and the distribution hub for the gas pipelines that send gas to Europe.
Massive bargaining chip there, if they can hold it. I'd be surprised if they can, long term, but it's put the shits up Putin. And he's going to have to keep a lot of troops tied up there now, even after they've gone.

It's a hit & run operation. Force the Russians to commit Forces, batter them and withdraw. There's rumours suggesting that Belgorod may be next.
Meanwhile, Valery Gerasimov should avoid windows above the ground floor. It looks like he ignored Intel about the Ukrainian build-up on the border. Oops!
