I’ve been in London socialising tonight. The guy I was with reported that no international travel was allowed at his company for the time being and they’ve just tested their contingency plans if they have to work from home. Keep calm and carry on.

The news coverage of this is really starting to get on my pecs now. First 20 minutes at least of BBC 10 o clock news...pissed me off so much I ended up muting it!

‘Could’ ‘might’ ‘can’ and ‘may’ being heavily used, the reporting almost trying to whip up panic. Yes it’s a news story but for fucks sake some balance wouldn’t go amiss..as in telling people how many of the cases in the UK have made full recoveries...you know.put people’s minds at ease...The cynic in me is more than half convinced that they (the media) are itching to shout ‘we’re all going to die’

What bothers me most about all this is that some people will eat this shite up and start panic buying causing a chain reaction in the sheeple at large when it isn’t necessary.

Fuck off BBC, fuck off ITV. Fuck right off..keep fucking off until you get to a gate which has a sign on it saying ‘You can’t fuck off past here’..,climb over the gate and keep fucking off forever!! annoyedannoyedannoyed

I get your point mate, I do think the media have over blown this to the point when they haven't even really balanced it out, evenly enough.
Yes there are recoveries that aren't reported, but the one thing I saw was the advice for people to use contactless payments when shopping, I think they have forgotten not e everybody will have credit/debit card!! For some of us, our perspective of this virus may only change once anyone we are close to are tests positive and probably only then it will really hit home what this virus is like, but I would not be surprised if by Friday morning/evening we are at 100 cases and possibly at say 15 -20% are positive. And swhether that triggers the next stage of government battle plan

The biggest danger we face, and I genuinely believe this, is not a disease epidemic, but an epidemic of panic and hysteria, all media driven.

The media at large are guilty of using cumulative data and crude numbers completely out of context. The all too obvious flaw with using cumulative data is that only one possible picture is presented, namely one which shows that cases and deaths are ever increasing and that the epidemic is worsening, fuelling the panic.

In contrast when using actual data which shows global new cases and cases which have fully recovered (something our sensationalist and panic stirring media refuses to do) the pattern actually shows a general downward trend in new cases and an increase in newly recovered cases. This suggests to me that this disease can be contained so long as the Government continues to follows good practice.

Imagine a world where every death from flu was front page news? It may surprise you to learn that in 2020 alone, 105 children in the US have died from the flu. The second highest number since records began in 2004.

This whole issue is a particular bugbear to me because I have an uncle, one of my few remaining close relatives, a particularly sprightly, fit and active 86 year old, who is now living in a state of genuine terror that he is going to die because of the wild overhyped media stories. Seeing him like this pisses me off even more, how am I supposed to even try to put his mind at ease when the media is one step away from inducing mass panic with overhyped sensationalist round the clock coverage on every news channel along with hyped up newspaper headlines?

The media stories pale in comparison to some of the stuff coming from the Government right now.

First UK death as a man in his 80's dies in Royal Berkshire Hospital

RE: Coronavirus - is enought being done to contain it? - Rake - 05-03-2020 21:35

Age-stratified death rates only start to take off from 50+.

Risk of dying by age group if infected:

80+ years old - 14.8%
70-79 years old - 8.0%
60-69 years old - 3.6%
50-59 years old - 1.3%
40-49 years old - 0.4%
30-39 years old - 0.2%
20-29 years old - 0.2%
10-19 years old - 0.2%
0-9 years old - no fatalities

Curious..

The story I have read is that it’s a woman in her 70s who has been in and out of the Royal Berkshire Hospital.

Get your story straight eh media?
