While in a normal atmosphere, the bones in the spine compress against each other; though while in zero gravity they are able to pull apart, therefore making the spine that little bit longer by way of this... hence the change in perceived height/length. I also discovered while watching a documentary t'other week on the subject, that the reason astronauts exercise so much while in the International Space Station (ISS) is because if they didn't they'd collapse once they come back into a regular atmosphere due to muscle wastage. Same way that people confined to beds for a long time also suffer the same muscle wastage. In zero gravity there is nothing acting against the body that keeps muscles toned unless they use those specially converted machines. Fascinating, & true...
