A cliff Clavin from cheers trivia fact lol

Apparently the expression chancing your arm came from a battle between 2 rival clans in Ireland. They were knocking 7 bells out of each other and thousands of men were losing their lives on both sides. One of the leaders decided that enough was enough so decided to call a truce
by offering his hand to the opposition. He did this by sticking his arm through a crack in the wall which left his arm exposed to any would be assailant with a sword. Thankfully the rival clan member shook his hand and peace was agreed. One of the leaders lieutenants turned to him and said" you were chancing your arm weren't you?" and a new cliche was formed. True story

In the old days in America during the harsh winter months people use to travel west to stay with their relatives in the west. When they had outstayed their welcome the host would produce a cold shoulder of lamb/beef for them. Hence the expression giving them the cold shoulder

When London hosts the 2012 Olympic Games it will become the first city to host the event for the third time. London previously hosted the Olympics in 1908 and 1948 and 2012 will take it past Paris and Los Angeles which have boh hosted the Games twice. Paris was the site for the Olympics in 1900 and 1924 while Los Angeles was the venue for the 1932 and 1984 games with the Los Angeles Coliseum being the only stadium where the major athletics events have been held twice. London was due to host the Games in 1944 but they were cancelled as there was a war on at the time. London was awarded the Games by a postal ballot of the International Olympic Committee in March 1946.

Interestingly, (I hope so anyway!) football was part of the programme and games were played at Craven Cottage, Highbury, White Hart Lane, Selhurst Park as well as at Fratton Park (Portsmouth) and the Goldstone Ground (Brighton). Sweden defeated Yugoslavia in the final at Wembley while Denmark beat the Great Britain team in the bronze medal game.

There has not been a Great Britain football team since 1972 and there will be an English Football Association team representing Great Britain in the 2012 Games.
