I'd be interested to hear of a fan of any PL club who doesn't have a complaint about Riley. He couldn't ref at the Reebok for a few years because of the fuck-ups he made against us.

Made me laugh when they brought in that respect the ref campaign at the beginning of the season that didn't last very long, you can't respect someone who makes really bad mistakes like refs do yes ref do have it hard and yeah sometimes they do make good decisions but they make ones that cost teams dearly.

The problem is that too many fans (and managers) mistake bias for incompetence. Riley is that classic example of a ref who knows all the rules but has no idea how the game works. You only have to look at him to know he couldn't kick a ball accurately over five yards. It's his revenge for being the last one picked in the playground his entire childhood.

When Sky have over 20 HD cameras at every match the incompetence or should I say human failings of a referee are going to be highlighted more and more.I have had my fair share of rants at referees that have cost us goals, players or even games in the past but I just put myself in their place now and again and ask myself could I do any better, even with training? All I know is that faced with the opinions of 22 multi-million pound salaried, persistent liars,2 spineless 'referee's assistants' ,2 blinkered managers and up to 80,000 people who hate me I'd struggle to even blow the whistle correctly!
Technology needs to play a bigger part in football and post match fines or bans need to be imposed for any player cheating, deceiving the referee or bringing the game into disrepute. We,as viewers, see the amazing amount of 'crimes' committed by players that go unpunished. They need to know that once the 90 minutes is up they could still face a ban or fine for what they think they have gotten away with.Honesty on the pitch would make any referee's job a hell of a lot easier!

I'm about to watch the Liverpool v Arsenal match and expect plenty of the above to happen!

The use of a timeout and video replay official is used in Rugby and in American Football...the use of instant replay is beginning to make good headway in Tennis too with the challenge option reviewing the ball trajectory and whether it was in fact in or out.....its all down to how the speed of the game has increased beyond the reliance of the naked eye....and like you say Dreamlander, with HD technology available and where viewers can pause rewind, even at times change the angles themselves, surely this 'perk' has to derive from first having been implemented by officials at the events.

Its about time Football incorporated this...if a manager calls a challenge, but gets it wrong their team should have 1 available substitution dropped...if they get the decision in their favour they keep their substitution tally....plus why not add the extra element of if a player is found to have dummied a foul or whatever, then he should be given a yellow card instantly upon review of instant replay....maybe even a red depending on how the outcome of whatever free kick or penalty may have been given would have affected the result....the fact that this could be implemented totally at random would in effect be rid of all the nonsense diving or amateur dramatics like in the Italian league

True it would be difficult to incorporate this in the event of a bad offside call because flow of play would be interrupted, but with the amount of money that goes in and out of the Premiership/Champions League and all European top leagues, crucial game winning/goal scoring opportunities MUST/SHOULD be better marshalled
