The problem so far with Root at number three is that the opening stands have been so short that in effect he's playing as an opener by coming in so soon. If the selectors could somehow solve the problem of Roy getting out quickly, then Root at three wouldn't be too bad.

Root bats 4/5 not the anchor/3rd opener berth in all circumstances I believe!!

Being equipped to be the third opener is a basic skill and mindset for a #3 By definition, such a player has to have the mindset that he will be required in that role more often than not. If a #3 is only capable of finding 'comfort' playing in that position based upon relaxing in the expectation that the openers #1 & #2 will always see off the new ball, and build the 'platform', then he ain't a #3 and that is without the issue of basic technique for the role! I agree that finding solid openers is the answer!! Easier said than done! I don't understand why A. Cook hasn't been approached to assist in this regard by the way??

England are unchanged for the 3rd Test starting today and have won the toss and chosen to bowl, although rain has delayed the start.

England claimed the 1st day as Australia were bowled out for 179. An impressive 6/45 from Jofra Archer on his debut.

England are all over the place, with players playing out of position, and nobody seemingly able/willing to show themselves capable of even the basics of batting!

Furthermore, the typical English one eyed appraisal has - yet gain - come back to bite! Perfect Batting conditions (ok fair enough) and England to pile on the runs, build a sizeable lead etc etc. As usual not factoring in - or giving any credit for - the qualities and skills of the Australian bowling attack. They have been outstanding! aided and abetted by highly questionable shot selection (it's true) which highlights yet again the muddled thinking to the batting order. It ain't working/and will not - work!

Talk from 'Punter' and Nasser that the opening pair are not giving Root the security of a solid platform - correct - that is because Roy - in particular is not an opener, but add to that, the undeniable fact (ok opinion....but not really) that Root is not a #3
