RE: Eurovision 2021 - Regenerated - 25-05-2021 07:52 Sadly, the UK cannot be relegated from this competition because we happen to be one of the "big five" - the five countries that are exempt from relegation, basically because they put all the money in to make it possible. That's us, Spain, Germany, France and Italy... although it clearly didn't harm Italy... For me there's two ways of looking at this. Scenario 1 is that it's always been a politically charged vote by the juries. Everybody votes for their neighbours so that they don't destroy international relations and get invaded. Also, the rest of Europe hates us, perhaps even more so since Brexit. Although that shouldn't be an issue. I agree that there has been political votes but I don't buy that everybody just hates us each year enough to give us nothing. The additional public votes were introduced to combat the block political voting in recent years to make the competition fairer. So that suggests that scenario 2 is more likely - that the UK neither has the heart or desire to put the effort in to make a respectable showing. To be honest, although James Newman might be a popular artist and has won awards, in my opinion our act was again a poor and instantly forgettable performance and song. He's not alone in putting a poor song, there were others. But for me we continuously put money, and I would think that the BBC would put a majority of that money, into something we care very little about. So either we put more effort in next time or we take the decision to get out of this thing. Enough is enough - another last place and this time being the first ever country to score zero from both sets of votes is just embarrassing. RE: Eurovision 2021 - Snooks - 25-05-2021 08:13 Eurovision seriously pissed me off the other night but then again it always does . I could go into a Eurovision rant but I shall refrain to prevent a cavalcade of profanities . Safe to say Regen summed it up very well. Far more politely than I could do. My version would just be beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeppppppp. You get the picture RE: Eurovision 2021 - Tractor boy - 25-05-2021 11:37 The fact we got zero votes from both the public and the professional jury, says more about Europe than it does about us. That certainly didn't happen this time, apart from Greece and Cyprus giving each other maximum points and Moldova getting a maximum from Romania. Neighbourly love seemed generally in short supply, especially in the former Soviet block where the top 2 countries in the voting, Russia and Lithuania, received very few of their votes from their neighbours. Italy got substantially more votes from that block than they gave to each other. Scandinavia is another alleged voting block, but Norway only received 5 jury votes out of a potential 36 from Sweden, Denmark and Finland. RE: Eurovision 2021 - SecretAgent - 25-05-2021 12:44 I see that as usual people are complaining about Eurovision. Perhaps it would be wise for such people to educate themselves on the European Broadcasting Union because it is that body which runs Eurovision as one of the benefits for its members. The EBU is a membership body for Public Service Broadcasters and provides a number of services to its members including Sports Rights negotiation, Music Programming etc. Prove to me that The BBC does not get value for money from the EBU and I'll listen to your whinging RE: Eurovision 2021 - Doddle - 25-05-2021 13:20 (25-05-2021 07:52 )Regenerated Wrote: Also, the rest of Europe hates us,This is of course a complete lie. France might be a bit tricksy , but "everybody hates us, we don't care" is the sort of small-minded drivel that you are told to believe as true. What is truer is that people in Europe can see what the UK thinks of them - which from the top down, is pretty dismissive and sneering. It's been decades since the UK tried to rub along with Europe positively. Our song was OK, and pretending it was a poor performance Wot Dun It (cf. 2003) is heroically pessimistic. So much for being in the big five we never win it we might as well start from the Semis we would be eliminated from that and not even make the final. If that's true then they don't think much of Germany or Spain either Let's face it, you'd need to be brave to take on the UK entry if you have a half decent singing career. RE: Eurovision 2021 - Kingsmind - 25-05-2021 13:40 Was interested in this here is the results of the Big Five France Won 1958,1960,1962,1969,1977 (5) UK Won 1967,1969,1976,1981,1997 (5) Italy Won 1964,1990,2021 (3) Spain Won 1968,1969 (2) Germany Won 1982,2010 (2) By the way if you are wondering why France,Spain and UK won in 69 they was 3 out of 4 countries to jointly win it. So the UK have done pretty well really only Ireland have won more with 7 all be it it was years ago and Spain must be as bad if not worser then the UK the last time they won it was in 69. |
