I get the feeling US politics is a far worse state than our own - or has fate made it, that both countrfies face a politicial conumdrum at the same time?

I'm not the best source as I steer away from Politics, but from living in the U.S.
Politics and core Beliefs became way too intertwined to voters

It's been ugly for a while, the divide is much greater than it was 20+ years ago
You get attacked if you are on either side of the fence. You are either "Woke" or "MAGA" which doesn't really apply to most people over here, but that's the country I live in
The Candidates will do what pleases their party and their voters. Not exactly striving to reach greater heights

The Election is just about Math
Some States will always be Blue
Some States will always be Red

I feel sorry for American voters, I think we'll have some stability under a Labour government, and whether you like Starmer or not, he's saying the right things in regards to country before party etc, if he's true to his word, then a few years in should put us in a more stable position.
I think Biden has/will lose it for the Democrats due to being just too old, yes his stance on Israel has been all wrong, but I don't think he's a bad person, whereas Trump, anyone saying positive things about him can't be trusted imo, it's not really about left or right with him, it's about him being mentally unfit, corrupt, a complete liar and oh, also now a convicted criminal. Great choice that for President Rolleyes
It's actually insane how some very unstable people are in office for the Republicans. Green for example, she is a nutter. We had Nadine Dorries for the Tories, but she is not on the same level as crazy as Marjorie Taylor Greene, a padded cell is where she needs to elected to. Some want the world to burn, those people need to be kept away from politics.

I feel sorry for Americans because this attitude leads to very strong mood swings among the political establishment which leads nothing of substance being achieved to improve the lot of the people. And for the heads of state/governments and foreign secretaries of other countries would feel that America is an unreliable ally.

RE: US Election & Presidency - Goodfella3041 - 28-06-2024 17:53

I have a friend who moved his family from a blue state to a red state, just to be around more “people like us”.

It seems crazy to me, but I think it will take a generation to fix it.

The political culture has changed so much. Differences used to be philosophical positions on things like the taxes, spending, the size of government, and the pace of change. But Democrats and Republicans were — more or less — pointed in the same direction. This was helped by the fact that information was consumed at 6pm and 11pm on three main channels — everyone was working from the same fact set.

Then CNN came along, which prompted the creation of Fox News, which led to MSNBC. The fault lines started forming and the fissures opened up. Then the Internet exploded and the fissures became chasms. Now everyone is living in their own reality, where every trivial non-event is perceived as an existential threat.

But I do hold Joe Biden partly responsible for the current mess. After beating Trump, he had a simple job to do:

1. Don’t be Trump
2. Reclaim the centre ground
3. Bring people together
4. Lower the temperature of political debate
5. Make politics boring again

That’s pretty much the platform he campaigned on in 2020.

Then something horrible happened. The Democrats won those two run-off senate seats in Georgia and — against expectation — they found themselves in total control of the government (Executive, Senate, House).

‘Sleepy Joe’ wasn’t nearly sleepy enough after that. The puppet tried to be a real boy! He took two steps to his Left and kept the Right on a low boil. The great ‘unifier’ became as divisive as anyone else. Polite, statesmanlike, a gentleman … but still divisive.

Whether by accident or design, I think Keir Starmer has shown the way forward for both countries. As a reaction to the disastrous Jeremy Corbin experiment, he pitched his tent as near as possible to the centre ground. That pushed the Tories further to the right, where there are fewer votes.

I really believe there is only one way forward and it’s down the middle. There is no “winning” when you demonise the other side. I am crossing my fingers that Starmer stays in the middle after he wins a great big majority.

RE: US Election & Presidency - Snooks - 28-06-2024 17:56

The danger of a two party system has increasingly played out down the years to such an extent where extreme views hold a degree of sway. Not helped by social media and the spread of repulsive, divisive and provocative bile being prolific.
America is hopelessly divided with everybody getting labelled. Trump has undoubtedly exacerbated this problem with the tone and language of his politics as well as his actions when in office. It's dangerous, it really is because it presents narratives that are a gross distortion from reality. Where balance and perspective is so badly needed the culture has instead gone too much the other way.
Trump is a danger not just to America but to the world imo, his conduct has proven that.
And what is worse is that in his own way Biden is a danger too. To have a senile, incoherent and weak leader of the major Western superpower in times like these is bad for the world. And worse still it increases the worry that Trump might win a second term and wreak havoc all over again.

Oh deary deary me.

Both T rump and sleepy Joe are well past it.Blood some youngsters, for the democrats it would not make much difference, republicans rely more on Trump as he has a cult following, most of which need to give there head a good wobble.A different democrat leader could do well republicans with someone different to Trump will struggle.

I totally agree but I do feel for Mad Nad - she must be missing her blowjobs from Boris Tongue Tongue but I'm sure she & Greene would get on well in a padded cell together.
