It's like they pretty much have forgotten how many Americans died from Covid when he was president first time round. The Pandemic is what really upsets me. The whole anti vaxx movement is absurd. We lost over a Million people due to how poorly it was handled Being in our own bubbles just made our brains mush. No more empathy in this country I don't condone violence. I don't want them to be martyrs. The cult will turn on them at some point RE: US Election & Presidency - munch1917 - 06-11-2024 08:45 Both parties need to take a long hard look at themselves. The best candidates they had were in their late seventies and early eighties, much the same as last time. Unless Trump changes the rules (which is quite possible!), he won't be eligible next time round, so who do the republicans rally behind, there's really no obvious candidate. Same for the democrats, Harris gave it a decent stab, but she's a weak candidate lacking any real charisma. Her main selling point was not being Trump, but I feel I know no more about her after this campaign than before. Is she a strong enough contender to stand again next time? On the strength of this campaign, I'd say probably not, but who else is there waiting in the wings, making a name for themselves, looking like a viable candidate. Much like the tory party here, there's a real lack of talented statesmen/women coming through looking like future leaders. I'd say the labour party here is a little better off in that regard, but only just. It's understandable on the republican side, as Trump has taken such a stranglehold on the party, and squashed any and all opposition, leaving a party of sychophantic weaklings, but the democrats have no real excuses. They had four years from the previous election to groom a suitable leader to replace Joe Biden, but they got lazy and let the time pass until Joe was the only obvious candidate. Even as that plan unravelled it was left to him to jump, no-one was strong enough to push him, and so they ended up with a last minute emergency plan-b candidate whose only real strength was not being Trump. No great surprise that ended up not being good enough. So what happens next time round, who are the candidates, who is likely to be the one picking up the pieces from whatever mess his orangeness leaves behind? At the moment, it seems an absolute lottery, it could be anyone, quite possibly someone we haven't even heard of yet. Having a relatively inexperienced non-entity as president could be just as bad as the one they've just chosen for a host of different reasons (cough ... cough ... Liz Truss ... cough). The next four years could be painful enough, but it might not get much better after that! RE: US Election & Presidency - lovebabes56 - 06-11-2024 09:06 When you look at the way the US voting works my gut instinct tells me our voting system here would never work in America You probably still would have got the same result but by a larger majority which would have been alarming. RE: US Election & Presidency - Cooper_temple - 06-11-2024 09:14 Wanted Harris to win. Had a feeling last night, Trump would win. Why did it happen - Harris attacked Trump too much and not enough about policy on economy, immigration etc. Misinformation/Elon Musk played a huge part and also maybe the US just aren't ready for a women president. RE: US Election & Presidency - The Silent Majority - 06-11-2024 09:15 The Democrats fucked up, big time. Nobody had the balls to tell Biden the home truths. Then, when he did finally see the light, it was too late to choose another candidate. Harris got it by default as she was the only one who could access the campaign money already donated. She was pushing herself as the candidate for change. How did she think that was going to land when she's already been VP for the last 4 years ffs. RE: US Election & Presidency - southsidestu - 06-11-2024 09:16 2024 has been the year of elections and the theme of those elections has been that it has been bad for incumbents. Whilst different candidates have had their own issues, be it the Tories & the mini-budget or Macron & his pension reforms, the one underlying current to all of it has been inflation & the cost of living. Putin's invasion of Ukraine has completely upended the democratic world RE: US Election & Presidency - ukusagolf - 06-11-2024 09:17 (06-11-2024 09:15 )Cooper_temple Wrote:(06-11-2024 09:06 )lovebabes56 Wrote: When you look at the way the US voting works my gut instinct tells me our voting system here would never work in America States are set in their ways. A cardboard cutout would stay along party lines RE: US Election & Presidency - lovebabes56 - 06-11-2024 09:22 I did even think at one point that Trump wasn't even there at a rally judging by certain movements, but someone else like him!!
