thought this was interesting and quite revealing.

Here is a Top 20 list of clubs that have graced the English top flight ordered by the longest period of consecutive seasons each club has managed. There was no league programme during WWI (1915-1919) and WWII (1939 -1946) and as such these are not included in the statistics. Table correct as of the start of the 2010/11 season.

Arsenal 85 1919 - present
Sunderland 57 1890 - 1958
Everton 57 1954 - present
Liverpool 49 1962 - present
Aston Villa 44 1888 - 1936
Blackburn Rovers 44 1888 - 1936
Sheffield United 37 1893 - 1934
Manchester United 36 1975 - present
Coventry City 34 1967 - 2001
Tottenham Hotspur 33 1978 - present
Newcastle United 32 1898 - 1934
Southampton 27 1978 - 2005
Wolverhampton Wanderers 26 1932 - 1965
Chelsea 25 1930 - 1962
Portsmouth 25 1927 - 1959
Huddersfield Town 25 1920 - 1952
West Bromwich Albion 24 1949 - 1973
Burnley 24 1947 - 1971
Blackpool 23 1937 - 1967
Bolton Wanderers 22 1935 - 1964

"ordered by the longest period of consecutive seasons each club has managed" This bit confused me but I thought Everton was the team who've been in the top flight the longest as they've never been relegated, I'm pretty sure this is correct but with no research I can't be certain.

everton were relegated to the second division in 1931 and came straight back up the following year. They were also relegated in 1951, and came back to the top flight in 1954.

In 1913 arsenal were relegated after winning only one home game all season - This is the only time in their history that Arsenal have been relegated.
In 1919 Arsenal were controversially elected to the expanded First Division, precedent suggested that Tottenham should have retained their place in the new set-up. However the machinations of Henry Norris meant the new place was awarded to Arsenal instead. As a result Arsenal are the only club with continuous membership of the top division since 1919 and they are the only league club not to have been promoted on playing merit.
