Another one that's crept in in recent years is if you're browsing in a department store and a young assistant will come up and ask "Are you alright there?" Why? Do I look ill? Do you think there's something wrong with me? (don't answer that, Chimpy!)

What happened to: "Good morning/afternoon. Can I help you?"
