anything over 300 in a run chase tips the gasme firmly in NZ's favour

^100% I couldn't believe that seasoned ex professional cricketers such as Athers and Butch were more - or - less dismissing NZ having any chance of victory. It sounded like that analysis came from a place of support for England, rather than any objective reading of the game - clearly they have forgotten that England have - at most - 5 wickets to get passed whatever target is set!! Having said that, I think the kiwis would have hoped to be in a position to push well north of 300. I am not sure what their thinking was in the latter part of today's play!

Game on for sure!!

NB I am astonished that, with such a final day like the one we have in prospect, entrance is free. It isn't the ashes so no bandwagon, but I would have thought that Notts could have cashed in, with the prospect of a more than healthy crowd of fans who are knowledgeable enough to know the state of the match, and the likelihood of a quality days entertainment that lies ahead as a result!

Huh There's a 5% chance of rain, so doubtful. Smile

Walk in the park for England after an initial scare of losing three relatively quick wickets. Stokes and Bairstow certainly gave a prime example of England's new mentality, which bodes well going forward! Obviously, not every track will react to the heavy roller the way this one did, and the team will have to tailor their approach accordingly.

I wonder whether - for the good of the sport - the heavy roller should be dispensed with, and either a half way roller introduced between the current light and heavy pressure??, with such a roller used for less time than currently allowed - or the roller banned altogether? It certainly changed the pitch overall (yes a few still did something)?? If the roller had not been used on this track, it may have retained some more of its liveliness, and maintained the bat/ball balance?? regardless of which teams are playing??

Well well that was a fun enjoyable afternoons cricket who has thought the shackles would be unleashed for bairstow and stokes just sitting back and watching and having the odd fun moment

That was Bairstow's best ever England innings.

Who would have thought that England could play such positive cricket.

I would question the effect of the roller, hornball, heavy or light, between innings. I may well quiet things down for half an hour, but that's about it. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it's just 7 minutes. Pre-match preparation, however will vary dependent on time & general weather conditions, it's a balance between artificial watering, or rain, & exposure to sun, & rolling. Not an easy skill to master. A good example would be that 2 of the worlds greatest venues, Lords & MCG have had their problems in recent years, & the quality of their pitches haven't matched the quality of their grounds.
I expect a good batting strip at Leeds next week, again, usually fast scoring, although the outfield has looked slower than usual this year, hopefully the hot weather may speed it up a bit. There should be more in it for the bowlers than in this match.
