If its Windows Media Player you're talking about, it sounds like what you're seeing is the standard WMP visualisations (look a bit like the Dr Who opening titles). It's an encoding thing, and easily rectified.

All you need is to download the latest codec packages for whichever model of WMP you have. Go to any of the free software distribution sites (like download.com etc) and you can get them there. I think you can also get them from Microsoft's own download page. Just search for codec, you won't go far wrong.
