Germany, Germany above all,
Above all in the world,
When, for protection and defence, it always
takes a brotherly stand together.
From the Meuse to the Memel,
From the Adige to the Belt,
Germany, Germany above everything,
Above everything in the world!

Is anyone picking up a common theme here with these national anthems besides the poetry of the words!!!!! about how they talk about the GLORY OF THEIR COUNTRY AND LAND!!!!!!!!!!!! NOT ABOUT GOD SAVING A MONARCH WHO HAS NO POWER IN THIS COUNTRY!!!!! Seriously our anthem sucks, it should be about the pride of our country and everything that makes up the beauty of our country, not about one person

Fair point but as a pedant I feel I have to say that this, the first verse of the original song, is no longer used as the official German anthem, due presumably to it's Nazi past. They now use the third verse which goes -
Unity and justice and freedom
For the German Fatherland!
For these let us all strive
Brotherly with heart and hand!
Unity and justice and freedom
Are the pledge of fortune.
Flourish in this fortune's blessing
Flourish, German Fatherland!

I've long been an advocate of I Vow To Thee My Country being our anthem but I don't see it happening soon.

Have to say i've always felt that our national anthem lacks in passion, both the tune and the words...and i refuse to sing it........

A good choice Rickhardo, personally would love to see Land of Hope and Glory but like you cant see it happening!!!

Sorry to drag up an old thread, but just wanted to have my say. To answer this question club or country?, I answer the question with a question. Which would I prefer Ireland winning the world cup or Newcastle winning the Champions League and I always arrive at the conclusion that I would prefer Ireland to win the world cup if I had to chose

England winning Worldcup or Liverpool Winning the prem, id have to say Liverpool everytime.

for me one premiership for arsenal or the world cup for ireland i would have to go with ireland.
2 premierships or more for one world cup i'm for arsenal. i think one premiership for one world cup isn't a fair swap.

The way liverpool are at the moment id rather them win the prem than england win the world cup. Also with no disrespect Ireland winning the world cup would be a massive Achievement compared to arsenal winning the league.

As Billy Connolly famously said, "the Queen really ought to be saved, and God's the very chap to do it" but the National Anthem should be about your nation or what it stands for, such as "oh say can you see, by the dawn's early light, what so proudly we hailed, at the twilight's last gleaming".....even "the land of my fathers" or that song about flowers has more going for it than our loathsome dirge.

The Queen can't help the hand she was dealt, and even many republicans have a grudging respect for the fantastic job she has done for the country, but once she dies I think we'll see some considerable changes to the monarchy, and I wouldn't mind betting that within five-ten years of her death, whilst "God save the Queen" might stay as the UK anthem, England will have its own......and my money is on "Jerusalem".

ps: as somebody who has watched a LOT of German TV over the years, if you listen carefully you can clearly hear a large proportion of the crowd at football internationals sing the original lyrics of "Deutschland uber alles"!
