Not because it was a (rare) British success, not because of the event, but simply because of the extent to which he obliterated the previous world record. Twice. A phenomenal achievement and no one's come close to his world record in the 15 years since.

deja vu skate. it was one of the first ones posted but as you said it was a phenomenal achievement and no one has come close to it since. and if you remember skate he also jumped 18 43 as well that same year but wind speed was above legal limit. glad you remember skate, i think its a record that will stand for my lifetime.

christian olsson had the potential to jump further than edwards which is why edwards retired. olsson since has retired due to injury.

phillips idowu silver at bejing 2008 and in an interview with the bbc in the studio he said he was not happy with silver has he was targeting gold. then in berlin 2009 wins gold at the world championships. has the potential to do it.

i very rarely disagree with you bigguy but that is total bollocks! saying christian olsson had the potential to jump further than edwards. when he was at his best before his injuries he was still way off 18 metres, his best jump was 17 83 indoors, and 17 79 outdoors and edwards once jumped 18 43 but was just above the legal limit, which is well over half a metre than olssen had ever jumped and he wasnt going to get much better. kenny harrison had a jump over 18 metres in the atlanta olympics to beat edwards but no1 else has come close to being anywhere near his world records, but teddy tamgho has jumped 17 98 making him 3rd on the all time list behind edwards and harrison and he has the potential to get over 18 metres but wether he gets near edwards 18 43 or his world record 18 29 i doubt he will.

All this talk of triple jumps reminded me of the Tokyo World Championships of 1991 and the long jump, Carl Lewis vs Mike Powell.

To set the scene, Lewis hadn't lost a long jump in a decade, and didn't look like he was going to lose this one either when he jumped 8.83m in an early round. He bettered that with 8.91 in round 4, which was longer than Bob Beamon's long-standing world best of 8.90 set in the Mexico Olympics of 1968. It didn't count for World Record purposes because it was wind-assisted. Moments later, Powell smashed the record with 8.95 eek

Quite simply, it was the greatest field event competition I have ever watched.

Also from the 1991 World Championships, Liz McColgan absolutely destroying the field to take gold, just months after having a baby. This performance earned Liz the BBC Sports Personality Award for that year too.

I'm not a Liverpool fan, but this was a great sporting moment. Steven Gerrard hits a volley into the corner of the net in the last minute in front of the Kop to get Liverpool into the knockout stage of the Champions League when they were facing elimination. Pure quality, what a moment.
