Which one though? I guess that's going to be the focus of the investigation now.

I haven't followed this story in great detail, but why hijack a plane heading east if you want to go to the west?

Because there was something on that specific plane that they wanted.

Yes indeed:

"The bomber vanished four months after it was found, leaving no clue to what happened to it - and there's not even an imprint in the dust to show that it was there in the first place. The disappearance of the airplane is most mysterious - it's almost as if someone or something was aware of our investigation and took it before we found out too much."

If it definitely went to Iran - then why haven't the Iranians confirmed or denied if the plane was ever spotted in their airspace? But I still think that plane disappeared simply because it was possible that there was something either precious or unidentified in the cargo hold.
would there have been enough to even reach Iran?

Quote:A team of seismologists at one of China's top universities said they had detected a slight seismic event on the sea floor between Vietnam and Malaysia on March 8, which might be consistent with an airplane crashing into the sea, and possibly related to the missing Malaysian Airlines flight MH370.

The discovery, posted on the website of the University of Science and Technology of China on Friday, is the latest of many possible leads in the massive international search operation for the Malaysian Airlines flight after it lost contact with air traffic control and dropped off radar screens in the early hours of March 8, with 239 people on board.

The Chinese scientists, with the university's Laboratory of Seismology and Physics of the Earth's Interior, said in their online statement that the signal they had picked up from two seismic monitor stations in Malaysia seemed to indicate that a slight tremor occurred on the sea floor at about 2.55am on March 8, some 150 kilometres off the southern tip of Vietnam.

"It was a non-seismic zone, therefore judging from the time and location of the event, it might be related to the missing MH370 flight," said the statement.

The seismic event happened about 85 minutes after MH370 lost contact with air control, and about 116 km northeast of the spot where it was reportedly last heard from.

“If it was indeed an airplane crashing into the sea, the seismic wave strength indicated that the crash process was catastrophic," the statement said.
If it did crash into the sea then how long would it have taken after the "seismic" event for debris to appear on the surface?

The Malaysian authorities have already named Turkmenistan as a possible destination for the plane and as Turkmenistan borders with Iran it would consequently seem that Iran would have been within its reach too.

I'm starting to think that this was a hijacking which went wrong. Maybe someone wanted the plane to go to Pakistan or somewhere around there, but after going along with the plan for so long perhaps the pilot pulled a fast one on them and turned the plane into the Indian Ocean instead where it eventually ran out of fuel. If the pilot realised that everyone was going to end up being killed anyway, maybe he found his own solution and by the time the hijackers realised he'd flown the wrong way there was nothing they could do which would make any difference because of there being so little fuel left.
