local searches mate. on your machine. turn off cortana and searchui.exe also gets turned off.
end result is you can just open a search and type control panel to get the ctrl panel up.
you have to make about 4 or 5 mouse clicks where on win 7 it was 2.
even then to find it in 4-5 you have to know where it is and they have moved so much stuff about its hard to remember where you seen it.

When I turned it off in manager it started right a way.

yes mate i know but look at this...

Unknown: 0 TCP myipaddi 443 https 191.232.139.253 Time Wait 03/08/2015 10:03:47 N/A

cortana is off but its not off its still reaching out over port 433 but is showing up as an unknown process. when cortanas on it connects to the same ip on the same port but is identified as cortana/searchui.exe.
basically it looks to the user like its off but its still connected and exchanging data. i turned cortana off 2 days ago and have rebooted the machine 4 times since.
i made no attempt to use search and have disabled it on both the desktop and group policies...

like i said earlier i wasnt sure whats going on but my settings aint sticking. things ive disabled keep being enabled and im pretty sure its something to do with this as its the only unidentified process on this port.

after a quick look up 191.232.139.253 is microsoft settings/data gathering ip this could explain why stuff is being re-enabled after i disable it.

1. Insert your Windows installation disc and restart your computer.
2. Choose your language settings, and then click "Next."
3. Click "Repair your computer."

if you dont have the windows install disk yet then you can make 1 from the media creation tool you used to upgrade to win 10. just run it and select the appropriate option from inside win 8.1.
it will download the iso which you can then burn to a disk or create a bootable usb.

Tried all that no luck said that my SSD was locked didnt know how to unlock it so just replaced SSD with another blank 1tb drive i had lying about and installed it again on that. took couple of hours to download all the drivers and stuff but back to normal with a fresh drive Wink

Will see if i can fix the SSD later on

RE: Free Windows 10 Upgrade - HEX!T - 04-08-2015 02:49

there may be a simple fix and could explain why your drive went offline.
if you had dual boot win 8.1 and it was installed in legacy mode. and was switched to eufi mode. the drives wont show up and will appear locked.
switching eufi mode back on in bios if disabled may be the fix.

I think with all the comments on here i'm now in two minds about whether or not to go through with it....and really need a vote confidence with it.....
