AAAAARRRRRGGGGGHHHHH!!!!! They STILL haven't fixed the fucking picture!!!

An email has been sent via official channels to Cellcast regarding the display problem.
We now have to wait and see what happens.

Hi Chaps,
I have no problems with Freeview Channel 33 and I get a good picture
on Babestation. I set my Sony Freeview Box to 16.9 widescreen and
now have no problems with any channels.
I use to have a problem with Film 4 and ITV+1 channels and I got no
picture on these channels.
I spoke to the Sony Helpdesk and was told to change the set-up from
4.3 to 16.9 widescreen which would fix my problems.
I said you should set your TV Type to 16.9 widescreen.

ok off topic how do you get a moving avatar? I thought that was not allowed unless their is a sneeky way around that.

That's good but they've done nothing so far. They already know we have a problem because Yvette quoted one of my posts on the show last night. Maybe they should be encouraged to read all the material we have about it on here.

Apologies Bagpuss, that first post was bollocks - this is the re-drafted version. I missed the fact that it was a Freeview box where you were selecting the 16:9 setting. It was your use of the word 'set-up' that threw me.

As I've said elsewhere, not all tv sets will produce the same results because some older sets are unable to detect the 4:3 element in the signal but will recognise the 16:9 one and will therefore just stretch the image to fit the available screen area. Forcing a manual change on the sets affected by the contradictory signal makes the problem worse. All it does is stretch the already stretched visible centre portion of the image even further. I have to say that I can only repeat what I said above. I don't believe you can have a correct picture whatever you think you are seeing. Sorry.

But now, of course you have the genuine 4:3 signal back, but you'll have to switch the set to that ratio manually, because they haven't restored the automatic switch code. annoyed

Setting the TV to 16:9, with what is clearly a 4:3 broadcast, unsurprisingly, makes the distortion worse.

The problem is due to the broadcast, NOT the set-up of any of our equipment, I'm afraid.

Well, they've achieved half the job. The 4:3 masking has gone. Now all they have to do is get rid of the stretch. Astonishingly they STILL seem to think they trnsmitting a 16:9 image. Don't they know how to operate their own equipment?

RE: Display problems on Freeview channel 33 - Censorship :-( - 09-06-2009 00:09

***STOP PRESS***

BS now seems to be broadcast in the same way that PP used to be i.e. 4:3 with 16:9 switching signal, which should mean that manually changing to 4:3 will give a true, undistorted, full image

Looks like the email did the trick! Big Grin

Bugger, you beat me to it! Wink

As for the switching signal, I guess this is deliberate, rather than the incompetence that characterised the last few days.

Why do it? Well, there seems to be many people out there who, inexplicably, prefer to have ALL of their screen filled with an image, no matter how distorted, rather than view it correctly, and have black bars at the side e.g 4:3 aka 12:9 (or 12P16, when 12:9 footage is included in a 16:9 programme) or top & bottom (say, wth 21L16, for example). Sadly, broadcasters often seem keen to oblige, rather than leave it up to the viewer.
