RE: Keir Starmer - and his 'U turn' government - Rogergilford54 - 10-09-2024 17:14 It may be unfashionable but you’ve got to remember most (not all ) pensioners tend to vote Tory (not that that’s a reason to take the Winter fuel allowance off them) but maybe they think people will forget in the long run people have short memories when it suits them. RE: Keir Starmer - and his 'U turn' government - Charlemagne - 10-09-2024 18:22 There were 53 Labour MP's who chose to abstain. And only 1 Labour MP who voted against it. Well done to the Normanton and Hemsworth MP Jon Trickett. The only one to have any balls. RE: Keir Starmer - and his 'U turn' government - Snooks - 12-09-2024 18:59 BBC News - National debt set to treble over next 50 years, says OBR - BBC News https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cewlwkg82ggo A sobering reminder of where we are as a country. A crippled social system and now this bleak forecast. The NHS isn't the only disastrously failing part of the system. Education, social care, benefits, prisons, courts and so much else in a parlous state of disrepair and failure. Talk of reform to our NHS is all very fine. But past experience of health professionals shows that with reform comes an expectation of staff to do more and more with less and less time, resource and money. This situation will no doubt be duplicated across the public sector that is already beyond breaking point of capacity. There are going to be more and more horrendously difficult decisions to be made by governments of all persuasions in the years to come. Partly in response to climate change, partly due to an ageing population and partly down to a burden on the state that is mighty tough to sustain if not impossible. Good luck to whichever suckers take on the job of government. It looks a forlorn task to me.
