Quote:After a special hearing on Wednesday, the California State Athletic Commission voted 4-1 to uphold their indefinite suspension of Chael Sonnen for making false statements to the commission in December as well as his criminal conviction for money laundering in Oregon.

The suspension was handed down in late April due to Sonnen providing false testimony to the commission in December that effectively reduced his initial suspension for failing a performance enhancing drug test for his UFC 117 fight with Anderson Silva. Sonnen claimed at that time that he had been cleared for therapeutic use of testosterone replacement therapy by Nevada State Athletic Commissioner Keith Kizer, though he later retracted and said that his then manager Matt Lindland had been the one to speak with Kizer about TRT.

Kizer testified on Wednesday that he had never had a conversation with Sonnen about his testosterone use, and that he vaguely recalled a conversation with Lindland but that Sonnen's name was never mentioned.

Sonnen testified in front of the commission on Wednesday that he had a TUF coaching spot and a fight with Michael Bisping hanging in the balance, and claimed that failure to get his license back in the hearing would effectively end his career. But Sonnen's history of misleading statements and lies to the commission was enough for them to keep the suspension intact.

Sonnen's suspension runs through the expiration of his current license on June 29, but he will not be able to apply for another license for one year from that date. If and when he does, he will have to appear in front of the commission once again. He can also attempt to get licensed by another commission, but as most commissions will adhere to the rulings of their fellow states, it's not likely he'll be licensed by anyone else anytime soon.

The case against Sonnen was argued by California deputy district attorney general Karen Chappelle, who presented Sonnen's testimony in December, as well as numerous interviews he made in the months following the commission hearing. The inconsistencies in his story, as well as the vehement denial from the NSAC's Kizer that he had any conversations with Sonnen, ultimately led to the commission upholding the suspension.

For now, the UFC will look for another set of coaches for TUF 14, which will begin filming next month, and Sonnen's fighting future will be in question moving forward. With no commission likely willing to license him until cleared by California, Sonnen may be out of action until late next summer at the earliest. And if his statements Wednesday are to be believed, it could mean his retirement.

Silva/Sonnen was amazing but was tarnished by Sonnen’s positive drugs test. Sonnen's brought all this on himself.

RE: UFC - groundnpound - 19-05-2011 16:07

Sounds like it's both. The false statements to the Commission and the Laundering. He's an entertaining character Chael Sonnen and a top fighter but the UFC are probs better off without someone like him.

He's bad for the sport with all his nonesense.

RE: UFC - TDK2008 - 19-05-2011 16:13

I'm with you that it's a big bit of everything. UFC are better off without him, they can't have a card at a certain location so Sonnen can fight because suspensions are usually adhered to across the board. Sonnen's buggered basically.

RE: UFC - mitchell - 19-05-2011 19:07

I didn't rate Chael Sonnen's performance against Anderson Silva it was a typical wrestlers performance with a lot of control & no effort of a submission, is he a good wrestler, yes but so are most of the fighters in the organization, he's funny & a decent fighter but there's no hole been left!!!

I've seen a fair few Kimbo fights on Youtube, I remember hearing about him long before he was involved in TUF & was just the Youtube sensation. I think I heard about him in FHM mag or something like that.
The Sean Gannon fight is his first loss or his first loss since he started videoing his fights I think, there's some controversy about the outcome of the fight with Kimbo saying it was just a fist fight but Gannon already training in MMA as a Police officer got Kimbo in a clinch & cut him of damaged him, I can't remember it's a longtime since I've watched it.

Kimbo Slice v Sean Gannon

I've seen a few clips of Pride fights I knew about it years ago but I didn't have access to the internet to see it, when Rampage came to the UFC & they showed some of his slams that made me check out some clips, some of the fights were quality with crazy KO's.
At the time of the Zuffa takeover Pride was the better organization but the UFC had the right country & promotion whereas Pride was just shown in Japan, it pissed me off when Zuffa brought it out not wanting the competition.
I keep meaning to watch some Pride clips aswell as some of the Pancrase fights but I always forget.

RE: UFC - Ro1982 - 19-05-2011 22:14

Theres some fantastic fights in pride alright the fedor v nogueria fights were brilliant they fought 3 times 2 wins for fedor that was really when he was at his peak, the other fight fedor got a huge cut and it was ruled a no contest. Some other great ones were bob sapp v nogueira, nick diaz v takanori gomi, dan henderson v wanderlei silva, kevin randleman v fedor. All the fights used to be listed on mmascraps.com but since the ufc took them over there all gone unfortunately. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=267i7rKeECA unreal submission on anderson silva

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5K0OJ6-aauo big slam by randleman on fedor

Top 5 favourite fighters would be 1. Machida 2. St Pierre 3. Fedor 4. Anderson Silva 5. Cain Velasquez

Always been a fan of Kimbo, knew his time in the UFC would be short though as soon as they started talking about his weak knees on TUF.

Anyone having trouble with this season of TUF? I just cannot get into this year. Been an avid watcher for the last few seasons but this one I'm just not getting in to :-S

RE: UFC - mitchell - 19-05-2011 23:33

Yeah I've been thinking it for a while now the fighters on this series aren't that good & Brock Lesnar is just a total cock, I've not seen tonights episode yet as I was watching the darts but it's been pretty poor & at this moment I can't see whoever wins going on to do much.

RE: UFC - BaddaBing - 20-05-2011 10:39

I definitely think it has something to do with the coaches. They are usually the driving force behind a season and give you a reason to watch but this year neither coach is particularly stellar in front of the camera and for me, non of the fighters stand out either.

I raised an eyebrow when Brock was chosen as a coach. The guy is VERY private when it comes to training etc and it's obvious he's only interested in himself.

I know this is a sport and it's about the training and everything but the UFC is an expanding business that is media savvy and wants not just athletes but personalities, you can't sell PPV's, TV shows, expo's or t-shirts without them.

RE: UFC - groundnpound - 20-05-2011 14:23

That sub on Anderson Silva was boss! Smile 1st time i've seen that mate. It's just weird to see Silva lose...could see GSP maybe do something like that to him?Submit him some way.

Think Lesnar comes across ok on TUF.I actually find him quite funny to watch.Everyone knew before it started how private a person he was and that he always puts himself first.I expected him to be a total penis but he's surprised me.Put it this way,i didn't like the guy before TUF started but think he's ok now. Some of the things he does and says are funny...Maybe it's just me but i think he's quite a sound, decent lad.

After the first 2 or 3 weeks i thought the quality of fighter wasn't as good as previous seasons but changed my mind after the last couple of weeks.Think Ramsey,Ryan,Chuck and the underrated Chris Cope might turn out to be decent UFC fighters. They could all turn out to be shit but i think these lads are quite decent.
