Apple v Microsoft - EmilyCharlotteJones - 01-02-2010 15:46

Often some-one smugly suggests that everyone should buy an Apple Macintosh and yet others suggest buying a PC? Then there is either Microsoft or GNU / Linux too?

What is the members majority opinion, please?

Myself, I have the following computers:-

My Mac:-

Configuration:
Mac Pro
Two 2.93GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
32GB (8x4GB)
Mac Pro RAID Card
Two 2TB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s HD Drives
ATI Radeon HD 4870 512MB
Two 18x SuperDrives
Apple Magic Mouse
Apple Keyboard with Numeric Keypad (British)
AirPort Extreme Wi-Fi Card with 802.11n
Quad-channel 4Gb Fibre Channel PCI Express card
iWork Family Pack preinstalled
Logic Express preinstalled
Final Cut Express preinstalled
Mac OS X Server Snow Leopard
Apple Mini DisplayPort - DVI Adapter
COUNTRY KIT,MAC PRO-GBR (Great Britain)

£9,301.27

My Windows machine:-

Intel: 486sx 25 MHz
16 MB RAM
500 MB HD
15" LCD screen
16x CDROM
Windows 95

£ who cares what it cost? For mine is fourteen and a half years old and still works perfectly well…l!!

My Linux Machine at my workplace:-

Ubuntu Linux 9.10 LTS

I have one of each. I got a Macbook Pro for graphics and video editing and i have a PC for gaming. I think both Mac and PC are great!

I have a PC, my operating system is Windows Vista Ultimate and it performs to its own unique standard and never fails to achieve what it sets out to do..................freezes and crashes at least three times a day, more often than not this is when I am in the middle of creating a video! How I love this happening!!Rolleyes

I've been really lucky with Vista Ultimate I haven't had one issue with it (appart from the auto updates... grrr). I am however going to upgrade to windows 7 at some point.

I think Windows 7 is going to be on my PC very soon, I have heard good things about it, another problem with Vista I have is its program compatibility, trying to find something you need to work on it can be a chore!

RE: Apple v Microsoft - EmilyCharlotteJones - 01-02-2010 17:19

I would never recommend upgrading simply for the sake of it. Windows 2000 is often an alternative to Windows XP for compatibility resolution. Also generally speaking Windows 2000 is the most reliable* operating system made by Microsoft for many reasons it was built from the ground up on the back of Windows NT and not Windows 9x. I would also warn all users who are not utter time-wasting masochists to avoid Windows ME like the plagued and bug ridden code that it is!! I speak from the experience of one who has used most versions of Windows at their workplace until I threatened to resign if I was not given the use of a GNU Operating System there. They must value my contribution, as the aforementioned attests.

* note: the word reliable is used most advisedly and also for linguistic convenience. Thus any hint of or suggestion of healthy scepticism relating and directly opposing to it's usual linguistic meaning was utterly and fully intended and is certainly not a coincidence, further more I would encourage it further. Further correspondence is actively encouraged.

I would book a consultation with ©K Computers before doing anything Bluearmy71!! I have found their technical support help desk invaluable and they are very reasonably priced too!

Oh no, not at all! Blush I am an Academic Researcher at The University of London. ©K is a National Company, however. My Brother certainly founded the company… I will, of course, freely admit…!! However, he, became and is now a Britannic Crown Civil Servant.
