Playing rar files on my tv - StanTheMan - 19-09-2010 20:14

I've just downloaded a clip of one of the babeshow girls from Mauro's site. It's a rar file in three parts and I'm wondering if I can somehow copy it to a usb stick and play it on my tv via its usb port?

Thnaks in advance.

no. not in its current format. you need to get hjsplit or similar (its free) and use it to combine the files, this will produce a media file in this case (somtimes a single rar archive, just extract it).
now it depends what formats your player can handle. you may need to transcode it to another format like mpeg or wmv. then just copy that file on to your stick and away it should go.

hope that helps.

Thanks, Hexit. I've been busy playing around since I asked the question, and here's where I am now.

I downloaded winrar and extracted the files. From that it created a single file as an .avi

I've copied that file to my usb stick and will see what my tv makes of it when I stick it in its usb port.

you will have to check your user manual to see what formats your tv can handle.

You may well find any USB / Card slots on your TV are only for viewing JPEG images.

Plus, alot of TV's now come with USB ports but they are usually just for firmware updates, and not for reading any media.

StanTheMan - If your TV has a USB it probably also has a PC slot for your monitor cable, though your PC may not be able to output in a high enough resolution to make full use of a large TV screen.

Thanks for the tips and thoughts, everyone. I'm just going to try the .avi file on my tv when I get back home later, see what happens. I'm sure the usb port can play movies as I saw a demonstration on one of the shopping channels where the guy stuck in his usb stick and played a movie from it. The tv he was demonstrating was the same make as mine, although I think probably a model or two on from mine.

depends most pc's can handle 460p-1080i/p just off basic gma (Graphics Media Accelerator) outputs, if you have any dedicated gfx card above an 8500gt your pc can output any rez that a tv can handle.
if anything it may be the tv that cant handle the rez from the pc (there are safeguards built in to most o.s's now to stop this), a lot wont handle ntsc outputs if the pal regeion or any rez over 720p 60hz. especially if its an hd-ready tv and not an hdtv. (1 is 720p max the other 1080p)...

My new TV can record programs to USB stick and play them back from it. It only supports .mpg files.
a 2½ hour recording of the Freeview ch98 Bangbabes show uses about 3 gigabytes.
Some DVD players will also playback .mpg files if burnt/copied to a DVD as ordinary data files.

thats what i was thinking. more chance of it being removable storage for recordings than playing files.
if thats the case then stan will have to record something from the tv, use a video encoder to look at the file and its preferences and hope he can convert all his pc located files into that format.
he should then be able to watch them on his tv via the dumpstick.
