No sex please, we're Telford! - iluvjemmajey - 23-11-2011 23:53

Wasn't sure where to post this but as its from a newspaper is media I guess?

Just imagine if other UK councils decided to follow suit in other British towns and cities?

From tonight's edition of the Shropshire Star newspaper http://www.shropshirestar.com/news/2011/11/23/telford-councillors%e2%80%99-sex-shop-and-lap-dance-ban-call/

"A blanket ban could be slapped on lap-dancing clubs and sex shops opening up in Telford, it was revealed today.

The borough could become an adult entertainment-free zone under radical plans to clean it up. A group of seven councillors have signed a motion requesting the town becomes one of the first in the country to adopt a ‘nil’ policy on the sex trade.

It would give Telford & Wrekin Council’s licensing committee the power to throw out any applications for sex establishments in the town.

Those looking to open sex shops or strip clubs would also be denied the right of appeal.

The motion will be discussed at the next meeting of the authority’s licensing committee on Tuesday."

I don't have a problem with this, because a town council should be able to decide what they do or don't want in their town. I go to lap dance clubs every once and a while, but there are plenty of towns where I'd rather not see that type of club, because it can take away some of the charm of certain places.

Now if they agreed to have lap dancing club open there, but wouldn't allow nudity or actual contact, then that would be ridiculous.

This is why we have issues with Ofcom, because they allow the babe channels to exist, but won't allow a normal body part called a vagina to be shown. Sad and I can't see their reasoning.

....and irrespective of the rights and wrongs of the issue as soon as they say there's no right to appeal they breach the Human Rights Act (one of the principles of the HRA is that a body cannot act as judge, jury and executioner without the right of independent scrutiny).

The council could end up with a legal bill of hundreds of thousands of pounds at a time when things are supposed to be tight.

The only winners will be the lawyers....

I agree with mr williams. I don't think that such a policy would be legal.
