Hauppauge HD PVR USB Hi-def H.264 Video Capture Device - zebra115 - 05-02-2012 17:08

Hi
Has anyone used this Hauppauge HD PVR USB Hi-def H.264 Video Capture Device to capture the sky broadcast? Is it good? Can the recordings be transfered directly to PC? Is it worth spending that money for recording the sky stuff or is there any other better way of recording the sky stuff?

Many thanks
Regards
Zebra

I was looking at that too apparently it has to be connected by composite cables. The device has 2 inputs : front = standard input (sky & sky+ boxes) will require scart to composite adapter ,back= hd input (to connect to sky+hd boxes.
Also one more thing you can't set it up to change channels as there is no IR cable (only available in the US) apparently Sad you also have to leave ur pc on as it doesn't store the video it has to save to pc.

This is why I haven't bought it, too pricey to be a buying mistake
If anyone else has bought it can you post ur review.

I use a Hauppauge HD PVR for all my capturing, SD and HD It`s brilliant. However, you MUST have an old Thomson Sky box with the composite connections at the back as all Sky braodcasts are encrypted with the dreaded HDCP, so plugging in a non compliant bit of kit into the HDMI port won`t work. If you use the scart to composite connection, you will only get SD recordings even from the HD channels as the full HD signal is only transmitted through the HDMI and Composite outputs. None of the modern boxes have the composite output anymore, even the Thomson ones. It was only included in the earlier boxes as many TV`s weren`t HDCP compliant back when they were launched. They are now and have been for some time so they don`t fit them anymore
It is best used as a record while you`re watching device and not as a recording device to put stuff on your PC while you`re not around.
Hope this helps.
