The European Super League: Discussion - William H Bonney - 16-03-2012 14:26

It appears that UEFA are giving up on the Europa League, as no matter what format they use it can't escape from the shadow of the Champions League and remains seen as a secondary competition. It's therefore likely to be scrapped after the 2014-15 season and the Champions League will be expanded instead to accomodate more clubs. The new competition has been dubbed the European Super League and England have provisionally been allocated 6 places.

But, if its going to be an expanded version of the champions league, how are they going to fit so many fixtures in this competition with the domestic league and cup fixtures in a season or else they want to cut the amount of teams in the leagues in Europe to 16 teams

I don't see any problem with fixtures. The champions league used to have 2 group stages if you remember, which meant 4 extra matches for teams getting past the first group stage, as there were 6 matches instead of just 2 with a knock out round. So if they add on another 4 matches it shouldn't matter very much, although it might mean just one extra knock out round, in which case just 2 more matches shouldn't be much of a problem at all.

Im not surprised the Europa League is to be scrapped its been on the cards for a few years now and none of the big clubs want to be in it anyway

As a traditionalist all 3 European competitions should revert back to elitist entry and 2 leg knockout format

Couldn't agree more. They should never have scrapped the Cup Winners Cup.

As for the "Super League" good, let's hope it hurries up. This will be the first stage in clubs breaking away from the Premier League to form a permanent super league anyway.

The fact that clubs set out and aim to finish 4th place is IMO embarrassing. Why not try to win the league rather then achieve 4th position!

Surely this plan will ruin the Premier League? bladewave Look at Tottenham now, who need to arrest their slump to make sure they still finish in the top 4. If the top 6 were going to qualify for the Champions League they could coast the rest of the season, because they aren't going to finish outside the top 6 even if they fade a bit.

if they did not allow clubs that were knock out from champions league to participate in the ufea cup/europa league than it would have its own identity. combing the old cup winners cup and ufea cup into one cup was sensible but allowing clubs that get knocked out of the champions league is not right.

if they did bring back the cup winners cup, ufea cup and the european cup (now champions league). cup winners cup (fa and league), ufea (2-3) and european cup (league champions). the european cup, ufea cup and cup winners cup would be straight 2leg knockout.

Why? Putting some of the bigger clubs into the Europa League should have made it more attractive! Important
