Singer Andy Williams has died at his home in Branson, Missouri, after a year-long battle with bladder cancer, aged 84.

He had many hit singles including his Oscar-winning rendition of Moon River, featured in the film Breakfast at Tiffany's. In 1962 he started The Andy Williams Show, which went on to win three Emmys, and was shown on the BBC for many years.

Since the 1990s he ran the Andy Williams Moon River Theater in his home town. The singer was one of the most enduring stars of the 1960s and '70s whose easy style and mellow voice led President Ronald Reagan to call him "a national treasure". A new generation discovered Williams' music when Music to Watch Girls Go By made the Top 10 in 1999 after being used in an advert.

Williams died on Tuesday night and is survived by his wife, Debbie, and his three children, Robert, Noelle and Christian.

sad news RIP andy

RE: Andy Williams RIP - Scottishbloke - 26-09-2012 16:39

Sad news to hear although it comes as no great surprise as he's been ill for some time now, he lived to a good age, was an important contributer to the big band sound, he delivered many great numbers, one of my personal favourites was music to watch girls go by.

It captured the spirit of the 1960's perfectly and will never ever be forgotten, my mother was a big fan of his work and she used to forever play his CD whilst cooking the dinner in the kitchen. Andy Williams music reached out to so many, a rare gift that very few possess. RIP to a great and much respected man.

Very sad news indeed to hear of the passing of Andy Williams, he was king of the crooners, and performed with such effortless style and charisma, he was an easy listening legend. R.I.P Andy.
