Larry Hagman RIP - Doddle - 24-11-2012 08:53

The one and only JR Ewing, a hugely entertaining actor who got to work with some truly beautiful women, and who had a wild private life and a fantastic positive mental attitude. Given his health, he did amazingly to reach 81.

RIP Big Grin

JR Ewing became one of the most iconic TV baddies of all time, and 300 million people around the world watched the episode when it was finally revealed "Who Shot JR?".

The speculation had gone on for months, but what was not known at the time was that one of the reasons for the delay in showing the fourth season of Dallas was that Hagman, whose contract had expired at the end of series 3, was involved in a pay dispute with the programme makers. Several alternative episodes were even made in which JR died in the attack and was written out of the series, but the media frenzy surrounding the programme meant that in the end the makers backed down and Hagman became one of the highest paid stars on television.

As Doddle said, Hagman had an "interesting" private life. He admitted having experimented with LSD in the 1960s and in 1995 underwent a liver transplant due to his heavy drinking (there were numerous reports that in his Dallas days Hagman was drinking four bottles of champagne a day).

Hagman was married to his Swedish wife for 58 years and they had two children.

He was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2011 and died in hospital in Dallas, of all places, at the age of 81.

Sad news indeed about Larry Hagman, J.R Ewing was one of the all time great scheming, unscrupulous villians of the small screen, and he was great in I Dream Of Jeannie with the lovely Barbara Eden. He lived life to the full, and always stood tall in the face of his illness. R.I.P Larry.

Sad news, but it was nice to hear he was surrounded by friends and family inc Linda Grey and Patrick Duffy.
You could tell he wasn't very well in the new Dallas, which I watched and enjoyed Surprised

His wife, who is also 81, has suffered from Alzheimers for the last few years which is why she wasn't there at the end. A sad way to end 58 years of marriage.

Well I sort of missed the era of Dallas, I was far to young to take much notice of it. But as an actor he was an iconic one. In many ways he was a representation of the American dream which really at the time was something that was seen as great throughtout the 1980's but at the present not quite as admirable.

Nonetheless although not really much of a fan of his work he was still somebody that I had a huge amount of respect for. His passing will be felt throughout the western world and in particular in the USA and the state of Texas in which he will always remain as a folk hero. RIP to the true Texas cowboy.
