I've got a 15 min clip that I initially recorded onto my dvd rec hd in sp quality, transferred it onto dvd, converted it to avi format, xvid codec, 720x576, bitrate 4 or 5 thousand, needs to be that to keep quality up. Its come in at 469 Mb, does that sound about right to you tech guys, or can I compress it further without losing quality.

Any advice much appreciated.

Cheers.

That's a really high bit-rate for that resolution. My clips tend to be between 4,000 & 7,000 kbps (depending on the source - different channels have different pic quality) for a resolution of 1280 x 720, and they come in around the 200MB mark for around 8-10 minutes.

Are you sure you need such a high bit rate for a 720 x 576 video? What's the source - one of the 900 channels?

Can't you convert it to WMV or FLV instead?

It's a clip from Babestation, I tried it at a lower bit-rate but it's too pixellated, I'll have another mess about and see what I can do.

Cheers lads.

Hmmm, I posted some Amanda vids recently and the stats for one of them was roughly as follows:

768 x 576, around 2,000 kbps, 8.03 minutes, 106 MB (H.264 compressed .mp4)
1092 x 819, around 3400 kbps, 8.03 mins, 199 MB (H.264 compressed .mp4)

Not sure if you saw them but I thought the quality was okish (I did reduce them a little more than I wanted to get them around the 100 MB & 200 MB mark)

So I would have have thought you'd be able to get a 15 minute Babestation clip at 720 x 576 to around 200MB and still have fairly decent quality, maybe 300 MB if you wanted superb quality.

DVD in SP mode is 2 hours for 4.3GB ie about 500MB for 15 mins.
This is mpeg2 format. It should be able to compress this to half this size with good mp4 compression without losing quality.
I use LP mode for my DVD recordings, about 350MB for 15 mins. I then resize and convert to mp4 and this reduces it to about 120MB. My main reason for keeping file size small is not computer hard drive space but the time taken if I need to upload it to the internet.
