The Velvet Underground were one of a number of groups (like The Ramones) who had little commercial success in their heyday but gained a considerable cult following in the years since their demise and went on to become one of the most widely cited and influential bands of the era.

Loved his 1989 album "New York".

No Lou Reed / Velvet Underground = David Bowie one hit wonder (Space Oddity) .Reed and V.U.were one of the main ingredients in Bowie's commercial breakthrough in the early 70's.The irony was Bowie produced Reed's Transformer album and was Lou's only real UK commercial success .The album featured the classic Walk on the Wild Side .
A true legend of music . RIP .
Sad

Actually, he had two albums which did better than Transformer (no. 13). The follow-up "Berlin" reached no. 7 and twenty years later "Magic and Loss" reached no. 6, his highest placed UK album.

The BBC football commentator Steve Wilson has just tweeted:

Believing that Lou Reed is dead is almost as hard as believing that he could live to be 71. An unmistakable voice and singer of great songs.
