Would welcome any suggestions to any free download word type software that would be compatible with Windows 8 after my free trial expired for Office 365 premium recently and do not wish to buy.

Libre Office and Open Office are both free and are more than adequate replacements for MS Office if you're not doing anything massively complex.
Alternatively you can use Google Docs through a browser.

That's what I have installed. It's pretty basic - but it does for me. I simply refuse to pay MS an arm and a leg for their over-bloated software.
