Yes I remember Mike Smith on tv & on radio 1 bit to sqeaky clean for me but a true professional married another radio/tv presenter. Also ran his own helicopter company did a lot of work for the bbc. Shame 59 is no age. RIP.

Sad to hear this. I think he was under-rated as a broadcaster/presenter, and Radio 1 and the BBC would both be better with a few more like him around. Then again, that's Radio 1 for you.

RIP to Mike Smith. His radio one breakfast show was always on the radio on the bus on my way to school back in the eighties.

Thoughts and condolences to Mike's family and friends. A truly underrated broadcaster on Radio 1 and on TOTP. I'm sure it was him who had a good collection of fluffy jumpers when he was on TOTP too. The Radio 1 breakfast was something different on in the mornings with his presentation. And possibly one of the nice guys in broadcasting and came across on the radio as softly spoken.

His on-off relationship with Sarah Greene was one of the 80's love stories and She looks still remarkably fresh faced for her age today. remember reading and hearing about the helicopter accident they both suffered. I think Philip Schofield had to present Going Live without her for quite a while.

Yes agree really sad. No age at all. My thoughts with his family and friends. I remember a few teenage dreams being crushed when he swept Sarah off her feet.

My favouite Mike Smith moment was when he was doing the Top 40 countdown one day and accidentally called "Love Cats" by The Cure "Love Cock"!!
Sad loss though - as others have said he was one of those faces and voices of our youth when there were just four TV channels and no more than half a dozen radio stations to choose from, and in those days to make it onto national media you had to be very good indeed.
